No messages in inbox for 6 days - using sbcglobal.net

Postby annettehelmbold » Fri 23 Mar, 2007 5:15 pm

The last message I had in my inbox 6 days ago was a message saying "Prodigy mailbox 100% full", yet there were no messages either in my inbox, trash or folders. I spoke with sbcglobal today, and they can't seem to help. I've gone to mail2web.com, I've reset my settings on Netscape 7.1, and I've sent a message to my inbox with a yahoo account. They all say that I have no messages in my inbox, yet the yahoo account bounces the email back and says that my mailbox is full. Yet, there are no messages anywhere. What is going on?

Is "Prodigy mailbox 100% full" message coming in an email message? or a dialogue in window (from software)?

I am guessing that your mailbox (in your ISP) is full. Most likely situation is that you haven't removed the mails from the mailbox. Try to download the message off your mailbox by not keeping a copy of the messages in the server.

No messages in inbox for 6 days - using sbcglobal.net

Postby annettehelmbold » Fri 23 Mar, 2007 6:09 pm

The weird thing is though, that there are no messages at all in my inbox. I went direct to sbcglobal (www.sbcglobal.net) and entered my user name/password. It shows there are no messages at all. I went to Netscape 7.1, which is where I normally send/receive mail, and I unchecked "leave messages on server" and I compacted my folders, as well as emptied my trash. The message that I received stating that the mailbox was 100% full was the last message I recall receiving 6 days ago. So again, at that time, I had made sure trash was empty, etc.

It wasn't until this morning when I thought to send a message to my sbcglobal mail account, through a yahoo email, that the email bounced back to yahoo stating that my sbcglobal box is full. But if it's full, where are the messages? There is absolutely nothing there. It states that there are no messages on the server either.

Thanks for whatever help you can provide - SBC hung up on me this morning after 72 minutes of trying to resolve this issue, and I've tried everything I can think of to resolve it myself. My suspicion is that maybe there is a large message stuck somewhere which isn't allowing me to retrieve messages. But if that's the case, I don't know how to resolve it.

Many people say that IE or Outlook Express work, while Netscape or other browsers or mail client don't. I think the other way around, and use Outlook Express only if there is something funny in my mail clients. Why don't you try OE, and see if it works or not. ISPs will be more responsive if you tell them that a Microsoft program does not work either. So, it is at their end.
Another way is to check mail at their website. If the box is really full, for whatever reason, you should get the same response at the website (is that mail2.web.com?).
Also, changing the settings would not be helpful, but it would help to delete the account (the mail on the hard drive is not lost), and recreate it with the same settings. You will start from scratch. If it work, then you can get your old mail. Please, refer to the last paragraph.

I also am on sbcglobal. net, but switched from a dial-up-only ISP, so there was a fresh start.

You used to be on Prodigy, correct? Did you completely switch over from Prodigy to Sbcglobal? And notify your email correspondents?

It is not crystal clear to me if you are attempting to get to your ATT/SBC account (annettehelmbold [at] sbcglobal.net), or if you've at all checked [your-name at] yahoo.com.

1. The sequence below may be of some help.
I put in http://www.att.com/ , which took me to
- https://www.att.com/gen/landing-pages?pid=3308 .
Click on Residential, which brings up
Click on Customer Support; brings up [above, but] pid=3312.
Click on Residential Customer Support, which brings up
- http://www.att.com/gen/general?pid=5395 .
Clicking on "Internet Support .. High-speed Internet support" leads to
- http://helpme.att.net/ . (This one is probably worth bookmarking.)

Right side, under Web Mail, line 5: "POP Access & Forwarding", brings up the first of 7 pages with 89 articles. Go to article 42 (page 5)
- http://helpme.att.net/results.php?category=90&b=41&e=50 :
"How do I manually transfer ... Prodigy ... ", which is
- http://helpme.att.net/article.php?item=6266 .
Or, some other topic may be worth reviewing.

2. Can you have someone else send you a Test email to both your Sbcglobal and Prodigy addresses? What error results?

3. By any chance was there some change made to your account profile? You've reset your Netscape settings; have you double-checked the settings on (your-name at sbcglobal.yahoo.com)? (The proliferation of corporate mergers has left a confusing collection of ISP access requirements. "The NEW ATT" has a whole bunch 'absorbees'.)

4. Are you using a sub-account for emails, or your main account? We defined sub-accounts specifically for emails (although we use Thunderbird primarily), and check the main address only infrequently for any SBC/ATT message. (And see Note 2, below.)

5. If it is (only) a sub-account that is bollixed up you may have to abandon it and set up a new sub account. You may be able to set up a Forward from [this old] account to a new one.

Note 1: (Aside to Fulvio: mail2web.com is correct. It is another web browser. When we were getting much spam (on one old dial-up account) we used mail2web to preview the Senders and Subjects without cluttering up our 'real' email Inbox. This use also precluded most malicious downloads when they were more prevalent.)

Note 2: Having written this - "infrequently" - I just did a check and found a message dated March 13. Reading through the fluff, it says that not everything works on Vista. Specifically, "Though other applications, including AT&T Yahoo! Online Protection Suite, will be temporarily disabled if you choose to install the Vista operating system, ...."

Thanks to all of you for your help!! What a great site, and also such a quick response! I came across something at the att.com website that caught my eye - it turned out to be a very simple fix - my trash can at sbcglobal.net, while appearing empty, was not. There were instructions on how to make sure it did empty. Once I did that, I sent an email to myself from both yahoo and sbcglobal, and voila!!! it worked!!!!! Unfortunately I've lost all my mail sent to me in the past week, but at least it's back up and running.

Thank you so much again for everything you all tried to do!! I shall bookmark this site and pass it onto my friends - I'm so glad I found some help here :-)

Ah yes. You tell the kid to empty the vacuum bag, and the next time you use the machine it blows dust all over the room. Ya' just can't trust anyone any more. Now, back before vacuums, they had to use the old broom and dustpan. Then one could see what he was dealing with.

Isn't technology wonderful? Transparent - yes; sometimes invisibly so, to our dismay.

Annette,
you would lose your recent mail if your set up does not include to leave mail on server. I have not used Netscape7.1, so I am not sure about its settings, but I keep my mail on server for 10 days, just in case.
