No WMP plugin for FF or SM in Vista

Postby richard mitnick » Sat 24 Mar, 2007 4:05 pm

This is especially for Fulvio, but in general, information for all:

After screwing up FF and SM, and finally getting out of trouble with good help from Ramona, I found the root of my problem.

I had tried to watch a Frontline report from WGBH on a Vista machine, using FF. FF said I needed plugins which I tried to get which screwed me up.

Now that my problems are finished, I went back to an XP machine. The video loaded perfectly in WMP from IE7. Then it loaded perfectly in FF and SM. So, I looked at about:plugins in FF and SM on the XP machine. The WMP plugin is there in both.

Now, I went back to the Vista machine and looked at about:plugins. No WMP plugins. I went to the Firefox support forum in Mozillazine and posted the problem. I got an almost immediate reply, pointing me to a fact sheet which says unequivocably that MSFT did not include the plugins in Vista. The sheet gave instructions about getting some dll's and copying them in to FF, but, frankly, that is not a place I want to go.

On the Vista machine, I went to the Frontline site in FF and hit my IE tab, the video started right up, because, of course, I was no longer in FF, but was in fact in IE7.

This now makes two places where MSFT in their arrogance has made life difficult for ordinary users of FF and SM, RealPlayer and Winamp: the plugin situation as described above, and secondly the fact that it is basically impossible to un-select file type associations in WMP11 in Vista.

Now, maybe, just maybe, MSFT will correct this stuff in SP1. Or, maybe, their arrogance will again get them sued.

Happy trails, and Hari Kishna (too much George Harrison music)

Richard,
I don't know if there is any harm in copy the .dll file in WMP11, and paste it in the Firefox plugins folder. But, I have been doing that on the regular basis. Java, for instance has not deposited its plugins .dll, and if the plugins program is already on your hard drive, it will not deposit the files in your program which was installed later. So, if WMP11 was already present in your Vista, it would not be able to add the files to Firefox, which may have been installed later. I have been told that Firefox seeeks the .dll files, so there should be no need for all this. But, since this was not the case in Netscape7, or Mozilla, I always copy the entire plugins folder of an existing program, and paste it into the Firefox folder. I have been doing that with Kmeleon, and other programs, and, interestingly, WMP-driven sites started working.
In FF2.0.0.3 if you go to Tools|Options|Content|how it handles certain file types, one should be able to manage the file types, with or without the .dll files. But, I never went to that trouble. It is so much easier to copy/paste an entire folder.

Fulvio-

Thanks for the advice, but, you know, you are at least a couple of levels more competent than I technically. This is not the the kind of stuff that I am inclined to do.

What I am inclined to do is to make myself "heard" in forums and with emails.

Microsoft has done two things in Vista with WMP that I have found SO FAR that restrict me use of my computer making it less useful than my XP machine:

1. This thing with the WMP plugins
2. It is well nigh impossible to un-select the file type associations in WMP if a user wants another player to be the default for that file type.

I will begin lobbying for these to change in Vista SP1 for all versions.

Meanwhile, neither of these is really crippling me. I will only rarely run into the WMP11 plugin thing, and I can still run Winamp and RealPlayer for what I put in their libraries.

Also, WMP11, in Vista does a much better job of CD burning and ID-3 tagging than WMP10 or WMP11 did in XP. I have yet to rip with it; but I have a Philip Glass CD and an Arvo Part CD to rip. If they go well, then WMP11 will be a worthy replacement for MusicMatch 10 which did all of those jobs admirably, and which will not run in Vista ( Yahoo MusicMatch is nothing like MusicMatch 10, which it replaced).

So, thanks again, I hope that you are having good weather.

We are having great weather, interspersed with T-storm. Very late spring-like.
As for ripping and burning CDs, I have never tried WMP of any persuasion, and Real Player is downright dumb, in placing the first track for burning at the end of the list. Winamp has fallen apart, and MusicMatch has been hopeless since it has been bought by Yahoo.
I am using only JetAudio basic, and, so far it has done a great job. Would it work in Vista? I don't know.

Fulvio, you are not stuck with YahooMusicMatch.

MusicMatch10 works very well with XP.

If you do not have it, I will give it to you using sendspace.com (which, BTW I got from the guys at Winamp, which has a very FRIENDLY forum) and I have my key for you to use to unhlock the best performance.

MM10 does not work with Vista. But WMP11 works very well in Vista for Library, ripping, syncing, and CD burning. In Vista, it is a worthy replacement for MM10, which I dearly miss.

Richard,
I am not sure what you are saying. I was, finally, able to download and install Yahoo MusicMatch10. It works, but I don't like it. And, there is only one type of MusicMatch
The new Yahoo! Music Jukebox is the ultimate way to experience digital music, offering the most popular Musicmatch Jukebox
as they are saying at their website.

No, No, No, my friend.

First of all, one can still get the real Music Match 10 at cnet.com. My friend just did it a week or so ago. But I believe it is only the free version, which is good, but not great. I had purchased the lifetime edition, i.e., all upgrades, way back when. And I took all of the upgrades. So, I have two copies of the .exe file, one on each of my XP computers. My .exe is 24.7 megs and it is from November of 2006, the last and best version of the "venerable" MusicMatchJukeboxPlus. It's too large to email. So, I can load it onto sendspace.com, which then emails me a link. I give you the link, you click on the lick, which takes you to the file on sendspace.com and download the 24.7 meg file. I give you the key. You run the .exe, and you "register" the software and install the key, and you are set.

This is not even illegal, because the entity with which i had a contract no longer exists. Yahoo is not who I had a contract with.

Please do not miss this opportunity if in fact you want the real deal.

Fulvio

The Build at cnet's download.com is 10.0.2058, added to download.com 1.11.2005, and who knows how old it was then.

My build is 10.00.4040, from 11.12.2006, and I got it immediately as it was available.

I am glad that this came back to the fore, It gives me the opportunity to share an email exchange I had with Yahoo about Yahoo Music Jukebox. As usual, the thread starts at the bottom. I used my status as a stockholder to enter through a slightly different door, which often gets information and/or results. Here what I got was some pretty good information.

Hello Richard,

Thank you for writing Musicmatch about the conversion to Yahoo!. We're happy to help you with this question.

Everyone will have an email sent to them regarding this issue with conversions. YMJ does not have the super tagging feature yet, but this has been requested as an enhancement.

Thank you again for writing Musicmatch.

So, Betty, are you going to email all of us when we can get the tool to convert our MM keys for YMJ? And does YMJ do ID-3 tagging or not? It does not appear to.

Thanks.

Hello Richard,

Thank you for writing Musicmatch about Vista compatibility. We're happy to help you with this question.

We regret that Musicmatch Jukebox and Musicmatch On Demand do not work with the Vista operating system. If you have a Musicmatch Jukebox Plus key, we recommend you update to Yahoo! Music Jukebox Plus. The latest version of the Yahoo! Music Jukebox is supported for the Windows XP and Vista operating systems (32-bit versions).

The same features you've come to enjoy in Musicmatch Jukebox are available with the Yahoo! Music Jukebox, plus much more:

- Play, rip & burn MP3s and CDs
- Create and share music playlists with friends
- Transfer music to portable devices
- Free LAUNCHcast Radio
- Buy music downloads - over 2 million song catalog
- Access Yahoo! Music Unlimited

A tool to automatically convert your Musicmatch Jukebox Plus key to Yahoo! is currently not available, but we're working on it. We hope to have it in spring of 2007. However, if you don't want to wait, you can do this manually. If you have an active Musicmatch Jukebox Plus key, you will need to purchase a new Plus feature with the Yahoo! Music Jukebox then contact Customer Care to request a refund for the Yahoo! Music Jukebox Plus purchase.

If you do not yet have the Yahoo! Music Jukebox, begin at step 1. If you already have the latest version which works on Vista, skip to step 3.

1. Download the latest version of the free Yahoo! Music Jukebox here:

http://music.yahoo.com/jukebox

2. Once installed, a setup wizard will ask if you want to import music on your computer. If you wish, you can import local tracks, music you ripped from CDs, MP3s, etc. You will not be able to import your Musicmatch On Demand subscription library.

3. Go to the Yahoo! Music Jukebox Plus information page and sign up for a new Plus feature:

http://music.yahoo.com/jukebox/plus

4. Contact Yahoo! Music Customer Care and inform them you have purchased Yahoo! Music Jukebox Plus to replace your current Musicmatch Jukebox Plus key. Contact Customer Service here:

http://add.yahoo.com/fast/help/us/music/cgi_billing

You will receive a refund for your Yahoo! Music Jukebox Plus purchase.

We would like to thank you for years of support. We aim to please you moving forward and we hope to exceed your expectations when the migration tools are available.

Thank you again for writing Musicmatch.

Regards,

Betty

As a stockholder and a user of various Yahoo sites, I think that what you all have done to MusicMatch is deplorable. You have emasculated it to the point that nothing is left but the name. It is worthless, except for use with your music service. That is arrogance we expect from Microsoft, not Yahoo. No shareholder want to own a company where the management is arrogant, witness the demise of Home Depot s chairman.
Music Match (MM10) was one of the best tools for ripping, burning, and syncing. I have two life-time paid agreements and you have just destroyed what was of value. You would have violated a contract, except that I have MM10 on two XP machines and still use it and enjoy it. But I have two new Vista machines on which MM10 will not work. No one needs just another player, and MM10 was useable at a reasonable price for much beyond your naked promotion of the music store. My XP machines are on the way out, which means that when that happens, you will be in violation of our contract.
If your music service has any value, it will stand up on its own. There was no need to rob us of a valuable tool. I highly recommend and beseech you, dig MM10 out of the closet, configure it to work in Vista, and give it back to us. You will restore many friendships.
