NS 4.80 search problem

Postby ronm » Tue 08 Jun, 2004 8:49 am

using Netscape 4.8 and just recently when I click on search (Google) I don't get any listing for what i am searching for. Always worked before. Any thing changed at Netscape that would cause this?

Basically, I used to get two sections in the search results screen. A listing of 2-3 items called sponsored links which were pretty much nothing. Then below that would be a section with Matching links which actually listed one or more pages of actual links to information pertaining to the search term. Now I suddenly am only getting the sponsored link section and nothing for matching links. Search does work correctly in IE. I I go directly to Google the search works also. I assume it is just a setting somewhere that has been changed and should be switched back. Any ideas?

thanks

Ron

The search button in Communicator 4.8's toolbar?

It redirects to Netscape's Search page, and they might have some problem on that page. You can always go to http://www.google.com/ directly.

I happens from the search button on the tool bar or the search box on the Netscape home page that comes up first.

As I said I can search by going to the Google link you mentioned. But the Netscape search has worked for several years through a half a dozen versions of NS 4.x. any reason it should suddenly stop working?

Because Netscape stops offering the search that works with ancient versions of Netscape . . . ?

The Search button in Communicator 4.77 (Mac) works for me. The Netscape search page is working, although the result does not look like from Google directly.

I tried an older computer with WIN 95 and NS 4.78 and it works O.K. So i don't believe that Google is not supporting NS 4.x. As I said before, I think it must be a setting that has been changed by accident. just don't know what it is. Any ideas?

Don't know whether this forum is dead or not. Haven't heard any replys to last posting. Just as follow up I visited someone else with NS 4.7x and they have same search problem although their's is on WIN95 and mine is on WIN98. So this means it isn't confined my computer or any particular version of NS 4.x or WIN 9x. Any suggestions where I might pursue solution, such as another on-line group?

People are alive, but may have no answer for you.
Netscape/AOL has stopped linking to Google, a while ago, and is offering its own Search engine, which I don't like. So I have set in the Personal Toolbar, a Google button. I just type http:://www.google.com and drag and drop the "thingy" to the left of the Location bar. It will come out as a Google button.
It works like a charm in 4.8.
