You asked about two distinct goals... backing up folders and backing up individual messages to a CD, for later retrieval.

I backup my mail folders to a CD-R just like any other folder on my hard drive. For example, I use DirectCD from Roxio (part of their EasyCD Creator software). I launch DirectCD, put a CD-R in the burner, format the CD, and then copy and paste a folder to the CD-R via Windows Explorer. Think of the CD-R as a big floppy disk. You can do the same for a file. Or you can use CD-RW disks for storage.

As for individual mail messages, I open the message to view it, copy it, and then paste the message into a word processor or text editor. I then save that message as a file to my hard drive. I can then copy and paste the file to the CD-R. You can open up NS mail files (i.e., inbox, sent etc.) with a wordprocessor, but I don't know how successful you will be at finding and copying the message you want. And I don't think you would be able to paste a message back into a mail file.

If you're going to back up on CD, then you should use your Zip program to zip the folder first. Otherwise the file attributes will be changed to "Read Only". I have yet to determine why this is so. I should add that I have been told this is not necessary for Windows XP, you might want to do it anyway, as an added precaution.

Retrieval
Copy the files from the storage media to the NEW Profiles Folder:
Windows will prompt that these files already exist, and will ask if you wish to overwrite them. Select Yes to answer this question.

Copy all the files with no .msf extensions from the OLD profile Mail Account folder to the NEW Mail Account folder:
C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\xxxxxxxx.slt\Mail\accountname or appropriate folder for your OS.
NOTE: in Mail & Newsgroups Account|Server Settings, ensure that the "Local Directory" setting points to the correct folder.

Caution: they will replace any existing files in the new Mail folder.
You may first want to rename the Mail files, e.g., change Inbox to OldInbox, etc. The renamed files will appear in the Netscape 7.0 Mail. This will ensure that you lose no existing mail.

You can copy/paste individual Mail files in the different folders, i.e. Inbox, Sent, or any other folders you have created.
