Office Application for Mac OS X

Postby Antony » Tue 10 Feb, 2004 2:20 am

It says...
This CD installs everything you need to start working in your home or office. The no-hassle, double-click installer even puts icons on your desktop so that you can get right to work.

Tested on 10.2 and 10.3 - Works with Apple's X11

Available from this page for US$39.95 (boxed version only, no free downloads)

But before I look any further,
A CD contains free softwares from OpenOffice.org and GIMP (both are free). Put them together, perhaps compilied for you, then charge you for US$39.95?

$40 for free software? That's a bit much, IMHO. I can understand a small fee, to cover costs of shipping and the cost of the CD, as the Mozilla foundation does. But not $40.

US$9.95 should be a sufficient charge for that software. Mind you, even at just short of US$40,
it does work out considerably cheaper to buy than Microsoft Office for Mac. And whatever the
price, it also saves a long wait while downloading. OpenOffice for Mac OS X (with X11) is a
download size of 173MB on it's own. While most broadband users wouldn't even flinch at the
thought of downloading that, it would take many hours on old fashioned dial up connection.

For US$40, the CD could do with having more software on it, and not all open source, free
software. There's certainly plenty of shareware out there for Mac OS X . Shapeshifter is a
good example of this. For US$20, this can give your copy of Mac OS X a totally new
look, with a number of different customised themes to choose from. It works very
much like WindowBlinds which does pretty much the same thing for Windows.

SeaMonkey = Swiss Army Knife: It's versatile, reliable, and contains useful tools.
Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!
