opening attachments

I use Netscape 4.79 (with Windows 98SE). Apologies for these possibly obvious questions; it's hard to find advice on old versions of Netscape.
1. I don't have MS Word. Most Word files can be opened with WP12, which I do have, so WP12 is set as the default program for opening all .doc attachments. Currently I can open files only by saving them and then looking in the Myfiles folder. Even if I right-click the file name and then click on "open," I am still rerouted back to the "save" window. However, .rtf attachments give me the option of either opening or saving. How do I set things up so that I have the same option of opening .doc files?
2. Not all Word attachments can be opened with WP12. Some of the holdouts work with Wordpad. At the moment, if I can't open an attached file with WP12, I have to go into Wordpad and retrieve the document in order to see if it works. Without changing the status of WP12 as the default for opening .doc files, is there an easier way, while I'm still in Netscape, to try Wordpad if WP12 fails to open an attachment I've just received?
3. Via Adobe, I can open and view PDF attachments, but I can't print them. Why? Can this be fixed?

It may be correct that there is not so much advice available, for the early Netscapes, since most people have udated their programs to go even past any Netscapes. Just think that there have been ten security updates since the last Netscape7.x.
But, you have a different problem, because you are trying to open files in a different format from that of your program. You should look at your Preferences|Navigator|Helper Applications| and see what you have for .doc files, i.e. application\msword. I have set to open with Open Office ( I have an old version of Word, but I prefer not to use it). Personally, I think that it is safer, with .doc documents to download them, and have them scanned for viruses. In fact, I changed my settings. I don't know while not all Word documents can be opened with WP. May be the are not .doc. You can't select to open some documents, if you are not sure of the type. You should download one of the balky files, and right click|properties, and find out what it is. I must have received one .doc file/ per year. I wonder what happens if I send an .odt (Open Office 2.0 file) file to other people. I never tried to throw them off.
As for .pdf files, you should be able to print them, from either or both the Netscape file|print, or from the Adobe toolbar. There should be a Print icon on the abode toolbar.
I don't have any of the NS4.x, but I doubt that things should be so different.
