Opera 7.50 Preview for Macintosh

Postby Edward » Tue 16 Mar, 2004 9:02 pm

Opera has released a Preview version of Opera 7.50 for the Macintosh operating system. It's the first Mac release using the version 7.x codebase.

They ask that the download link not be distributed directly. If one is interested in checking it out, go to My Opera Forums, click Beta Testing, and there will be a thread (Opera 7.50 Preview 3 for Mac) announcing the Mac version with the download link in that thread.

PLEASE NOTE: As this is a Preview (i.e. beta) release, please expect to find bugs.

SeaMonkey = Swiss Army Knife: It's versatile, reliable, and contains useful tools.
Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!

It doesn't really seem much different to the Windows version, apart from the Mac OS X native "pinstripe"
effect in the UI. I'm not keen on having the browser tabs being put above the location bar, rather than
beneath it. On the plus side, the text based ads are better than the unnecessarily intrusive ad-banner
used in previous version of Opera. I still prefer using a browser with an advert free interface though.

Although overall, Opera 7.50 (so far) is an improvement over earlier versions of Opera 7.xx, IMO the
default UI is still a little bit too cluttered for my liking. The first thing I got rid of, was the extra set
of buttons down the left hand side of the browser window. I also ditched the Google search field,
on the right of the location bar (I also do this with installations of Mozilla Firefox) as I'd much
rather go direct to google.co.uk if I want to search for something on the web . . .

I found the preview to be speedy. That is, faster than Safari. However, I did see one bug. When I launch the browser anew, I found that Opera froze in the middle of rendering. Weird. Other than that, This could be the big alternative to Tasman, Gecko, and KHTML/WebCore.

The tabs can be moved to the bottom of the screen in the Linux version, so I would presume that this can also be done in both the Macintosh and Windows versions. I keep them at the top as I've been used to them being there all this time.

I have finally replaced Opera 7.23 for Linux with 7.50 Preview 4 for Linux since one of the major annoyances I found in 7.50 Previews 2 and 3, has been fixed in this release.

Faster than Safari??? :)

Please report that bug to the Opera Bug Report web page. They read all bugs reports that are submitted. The page automatically fills information in from the browser version used, so I would recommend you use Opera when reporting the bug.

You may also want to look at this page, third problem listed, for some tips.
