How would you compare OPera ? Do you think it is better than IE ?
I do... But that is my opinion... Is Opera a very used browser?
I would like some input about this browser...
Thanks for any and all opinions....

Opera is indeed better than IE.

It is more secure than IE, loads and runs faster than IE, and it's very easy to use.

Pop-ups can be turned off in Opera (they can't in IE).

It's also a web-standards compliant browser.

I'm sure others will have positive and negative opinions about Opera, but I have been extremely pleased using it (Windows version for 2 years (since version 5), and Linux version for just under 2 weeks).

Just to answer to this part of your question, I can tell you that Opera is from Norway. It is not used all that much, but more Europeans use it than Americans. I remember paying for it, I am not even sure how much,$39? for it about four years ago. And, there were more expenses with any major upgrade. I liked it, but I could not see myself spending at least $15 for each upgrade to have ads-free. Ads-sponsored Opera came, I believe with v.5. I like it, but I could never get its mail to work. They say that it is better now, but have never tried its mail.

But, I heard Opera's web standards support is funny - in the sense that it supports some web standards, and doesn't support others like the DOM. It also has ads in it which sucks, wereas Mozilla is open source and FREE

Jarrad - Could you post a link to a web site that uses DOM, I'd like to see what happens in both versions (Windows and Linux). Thanks.

Fulvio - They have improved the mail and news client with M2. I've had no problems with it.

That site gave me what amounted to a 404 error.

http://www.w3.org/2003/02/06-dom-support.xhtml
http://www.w3.org/2003/02/06-dom-support.html

It suggested the above two pages.

Both of them looked fine in the Linux version of Opera.

In the Windows version, the pages looked the same. When the mouse was moved over the links, they highlighted yellow.

The M2 mail client does the same thing, if there are any URL's in an e-mail. they also highlight when the mouse is moved over one.

I have been dabbling with Opera since around the 3.x days. Have always thought it had its possibilities ... plug ins and email have always given cause to return to Netscape or Mozilla, even with 7.x. Password management is superior to Netscape/Mozilla. Themes, if you view this as important, is far and away superior to Netscape/Mozilla.
I have 128mb RAM - Opera usually takes around 5 seconds to load. Using Quicklaunch/Mozilla - immediate.

In my opinion, if Opera were to become more plug in compliant, dress up their email client, separate news client from email client ie. we'd have a true contender.

Much improved from 3.x

Ed,
I set up one mail account, once, but since it was giving me disconnected status for both POP3 and SMTP, I gave up. This time, I set up a different account. And, I have seen mail from my previous set account only. I can send mail, but I still get the disconnected status. I have Cable.
I have tried a a dozen mail clients, but I have never seen anything wackier than M2.
What should I be looking for?

Since you're on cable (as I am), it's possible that the client is connecting and disconnecting from the POP3 server so fast, you don't even see a "Connecting" indicator. That happens here.

It will continuously show "Disconnected", if it is not connected at all, or has finished connecting previously.

If you can send but cannot receive, I could only guess that there is a problem with the settings, or maybe the TLS box is checked (it shouldn't be). Receiving mail settings, should be set to port 110, sending is port 25.

7.20 (still in beta) has additional selections for e-mail authentication, according to the changelog I saw.

Opera is definately better than IE. As for browser usage, It believe it's about 1%, although it's still the 3rd most popular browser in the world. My friend loves Opera and uses it all the time. I personally prefer Netscape, as many websites can look ever so slightly naff in Opera.... or maybe they don't. A lot of websites didn't render too wonderfully in Opera 6, although I know Opera 7 is a lot better. M2 is wacky, but... oh well.

There have been some new enhancements to M2, which will be in version 7.20.

Opera has version 7.20 available for Linux and Windows, and now also for FreeBSD and Solaris. All four are still in beta though.

This is the 7.20 beta for Windows changelog.
