It's ok, but it has banner ads - which are annoying. You can always pay for it, but no thanks. Opera has had it's fair share of security problems (remember Opera 7.0?) too, although not as serious as Internet Explorer's problems.

Opera is very fast when it comes to plugging security holes, and releasing a new version which fixes whatever the issue may be.

I cannot say the same regarding Microsoft.

Having used Opera since version 5.00, I'm very pleased with it.

Version 7.50 which is still in beta at last check, is a different animal than past versions. The Hotlist has been replaced with something new, and it took a little bit of time to get used to at first.

I have had Opera installed on a couple of older machines; the browser itself I found to be ok but the plug-ins remain to be a hinderance for me. Adding plug-ins to Mozilla, much simpler. I just need the stuff to work and then get going. My last paid installation of Opera was 7.11.
Have things improved as far as plug-in recognition and installation such as Java or Shockwave?

We do not promote the use of warez, cracks, or other illegal software on SD701.
If you use Opera, and you want to get rid of the ad-banner, you should pay for it.

I fully understand Greg's comment and concern.

Ghostman 1 appears to have implied that he is using Opera ad-banner-free without paying the license fee. When the license fee is paid, the user receives a registration key which removes the ad-banner from the software.

Opera is currently offering a deal to schools (click here for info), which results in a licensed version of Opera being made available to the entire student body of schools.

Hello again!

Let me return to topic:

I found the lates beta release with new GUI quite nice. Regarding the Plugins, I must join the jksteinhauer`s opinion.
If you compare browsers only Opera and Firefox are on the same speed.
If you use Opera on work and send a lot of documents as attachments, Opera isn`t so great anymore, since MAPI was forgotten !

I haven't had problems with the plugins under Windows XP, but under Linux - it's definitely a problem, since none of them work.

Well... I paid for Opera (version 7.23). I used it for several months and found the plug-ins problematic. Additionally, far more sites did not render properly than with Mozilla. Then there was the aspect of M2. It's confusing to say the least. In theory it could present a formidable email client given its one data base and penchant for quickly searching through that base to find a specific email BUT for the average user it was over-kill and ... confusing. The beta version 7.5 is interesting and very customizable. I think, however, that customization can be overdone. In the final analysis I think most users simply want to "get on with it" rather than play endlessly with tweaking this and that. THAT is where Opera falls down (IMO). I see it more as the darling of "geeks" rather than the everyday workhorse of average users who could care less about many of the things they currently trumpet.

In the end I dumped it... actually, turned my registration key over to my wife (who used it for a short time and consigned it to the backburner). I am much happier with Mozilla (but then, I've always come back to Netscape). :)
