Hey, Jeffredo

How's it going, anyway. I remember you as one of the friendly ones (and there were a few Opera lovers who were helpful and friendly.. you, Scipio, Marcfou, TreeGo, daWolf). But Haavard is ...well... he is what he is. Not sure if it's a cultural thing or what but I sure have a hard time with that man. Anyway... as you can see from my user agent string... I'm still using Opera and I still recommend it to family and friends, albeit it is NOT my default browser and I do NOT use M2 (and won't). I'm Netscape through and through but I recognize some very sound advantages in Opera. I just have to watch what I say around that forum (actually, I don't say much anymore). If I need to know anything, it's better that I come here where the posters are friendlier and far more helpful. :)

You're story with Opera is pretty much mine in a nutshell (I just didn't have quite as many forum adventures!). I still have 7.54U1 on my PC, but it get's used about every other day as opposed to the constant use with Firefox, Moz and K-meleon (and Netscape if they ever get around to updating it again). I'm just into Gecko! :)

What was/is it that you were trying to enable in Opera?

Hi Edward

I can't answer for Jeffredo, obviously, but in own case, I had posted an inquiry regarding compacting the email client. I discovered, more or less on my own, that:

- M2 does not have folders, per se, but rather differing views of the same, one data base.

- marking something as Read simply removed it from view

- deleting something, removed it to Trash and Emptying Trash essentially got rid of it

It was at this point that my confusion began. I know that emptying trash in Thunderbird/Mozilla/Netscape does NOT mean that it is truly gone. The only way to truly rid a folder of its contents is to compact it. Ramona and others have posted information regarding the importance of compacting... not just to conserve space (since we have such large hard drives today) but to prevent the various boxes/folders from corrupting over time.

I wondered about M2. I was told that one could NOT manually compact this client... that is does it to itself when a certain percentage is reached (something like 7 %). I find this unaccpetable, just as I find unacceptable the attitude that they know what is best and therefore will not allow me to send html messages (oh... I can receive them all right but not send them). I rarely do this anyway, but I want the privilege of determining what is right and not right for me and therefore it seems to me that I should have that option.

So... back to compacting. Apparently I can't do it in M2. It will do it when it's good and ready.... right? It was like pulling teeth to get anyone over there to admit this and after several insults I essentially gave up asking anymore questions.

I forgot. It was something in 7.23 that I asked.

James,

Beacuse Opera (M2) uses a database for the messages, instead of folders, this is likely the reason why it cannot be compacted like Mozilla.

If you go to http://tntluoma.com/opera/lover/7/11/ scroll down to There is no spoon...I mean folder, the paragraph under that, goes into a little more detail about this.

Thanks, Edward. I skimmed through this (and did so about a year ago) but failed to find any information on compacting M2's database. And I did a Search and failed to come up with anything on the subject. But it did give me a better grasp of M2 and I'll go back and read it at more leisure. I doubt it will change my mind since I'm so firmly entrenched in the "rest of the email world's" way of doing things. But hey... who can say? I appreciate the non-judgmental help. :)

Yeah, Haavard can get kinda annoying if you don't like Opera Software's One Best Viewpoint On Things (ahem... 7.60P2...)

Don't be surprised by my UA flipping from Opera 7.5x Linux or Win, Netscape Communicator 4.8 Linux, Dillo 0.8.0, Mosaic 2.7b5 Linux, or Firefox 0.9 Win.
