OS X, the world's safest OS from security attacks.

Postby Antony » Tue 02 Nov, 2004 11:34 pm

A deep study by a UK based security firm mi2g concludes that Mac OS X and Open Source BSD are the "world's safest and most secure 24/7 online computing environments."

mi2g analysed 235,907 successful digital breaches against permanently connected - 24/7 online - computers across the globe. Of the nearly quarter million breaches carried out by hackers from November 2003 to October 2004, only 4.82% were against Mac OS X or BSD based online computers.

Deep study: The world's safest computing environment (mi2g)

"More and more smart individuals, government agencies and corporations are shifting towards Apple and BSD environments in 2004," said DK Matai, Executive Chairman of mi2g. "For how long can the truth remain hidden that the great emperors of the software industry are wearing no clothes fit for the fluid environment in which computing takes place, where new threats manifest every hour of every day. There is an accelerating paradigm shift visible in 2004 and busy professionals have spotted the benefits of Apple and BSD because they don't have the time to cope with umpteen flavours of Linux or to wait for Microsoft's Longhorn when Windows XP has proved to be a stumbling block in some well chronicled instances."

But how many of those actually ran BSD or OS X as compared to Linux, Windows or Netware? If only say 5% of those machines ran OSX or BSD, then only 5% of the attacks could be made against those platforms.

You will need to check NetCraft for the stats. SillyDog701 runs on FreeBSD.

A friend of mine commented on this article, and he is an MCSE:

'"Mac OS X and BSD Unix represent a smaller installed base of computers than Windows or, by some estimates, Linux machines. This has led to what some security experts and industry pundits call "security through obscurity:" Since there are fewer Macs, fewer hackers will try to exploit them, since they're likely to have a less widespread impact and aren't as familiar with the operating system. Mi2g makes no attempt to weigh in on this issue."'

That article does address the market share of Mac OS X and BSD Unix systems.
