Panic -- 6.0/7.01 Email Gateway Timeout 504 Problems

Postby misul » Fri 13 Dec, 2002 10:02 pm

Hi folks, good to see Antony and Fulvio still there, from way back in a previous life when they helped me enormously on NS 4.x problems. Wtih mixed feelings, I am back. 'fraid I a problem hit at a critical time. Can't afford to miss key e-mails.

Was running 6.x no problems for months. Suddenly, last night:

-- While browser was still working, when I would seek for new mail, e-mail would simply say "loading", and then "Gateway timeout 504". Exact language is:

"Gateway Timeout
The following error occurred:
A DNS lookup error occurred. The request timed out during the lookup."

--I loaded 7.01 on top. Same problem. I then backed up e-mail, entirely unloaded all Netscape, and reinstalled 7.01.

-- Same problem.

-- Note: In the last 3 weeks, before, this happened, sometimes (not always), when running NS 6.x, I would have to wait while it "recreated/rebuilt" my somewhat bloated inbox, so that I would have to wait and watch my immediately previous inbox contents count up, with the messages apearing, and only then my (customized) password box would come up, so that I could access new messages. It was not clear why sometimes it did, sometimes it did not do this.

-- Windows 2000; 512 Meg RAM; P3; Zonealarm Pro; Spamkiller, among others. Notably, Spamkiller is not able to connect to check either. I am a "long-term uses Newbie" as itwere, but it seems to me this has nothing to do with my ISP. Perhaps I am wrong. As I say, surfing is no problem.

Urgent help greatly appreciated, folks, as this is time-sensitive.

Many thanks in advance.

Just a few shots in the dark, so to speak (I'm not an E-mail expert):

1. Have you tried turning off all of ZoneAlarm's privacy controls (if they are on, that is)? Or try turning ZoneAlarm off (perhaps tell it not to run at start-up, the restart the system to make sure ZA is all gone)?

2. Of course, check your proxy settings to make sure that no program has fooled around with them. Most people should have a "direct connection to internet" setting.

3. Since SpamKiller affects E-mail, perhaps that is the culprit and should be turned off or uninstalled.

4. Have you checked with your ISP and made sure that nothing has changed with their E-mail settings that might cause Netscape problems? Have you checked your own E-mail settings to make sure nothing has changed.

This is just some initial thoughts for you to consider. It is probably best to wait for the experts on this forum to offer better advice. Fulvio can certainly advise if this might be a profile problem.

Profman - thanks

Dear Profman:

Many thanks for the input; while I await any other input, I will check some of your tips. Nothing springs to mind, but I shall go through your checklist carefully; maybe, just maybe there is an ISP issue.

Many thanks, again

Don't panic yet. Error 504 is caused by one server being used by another server not responding on time. And, Gateway and DNS are IP addresses which allow you to connect to the Intenet in some way or other. It could be your Internet Provider causing the problem. I never ran into anything like this, but, if you contact your IP, and they do not give their blessing to NS6 see if you can have mail set up another way.
At this point I realize that there was more of a message, so I cut and pasted, but I am not starting afresh. A few other things, I never have more than 30 messages in the Inbox. If there is anything important to save, I create another Inbox, with a slightly different name. I also have six e-mail accounts, to keep Spam off balance, so my Inbox never has a chance to get bloated. Zone Alarm Pro is a big pain. I do not understand what you mean about Spamkiller, but that could give you problems.
In doubt, disable Spamkiller and see what happens. Next , disable Zone alarm, briefly. I think that you are doing thing that are too complicated.

I come before ye all humbly ....

Folks:

First, thanks to Profman and the ever-trusty Fulvio.

Profman thought the experts would be the ones. Well you both were. Sometimes a complex problem can actually have a simple answer.

I had not read a (foreign) language ISP letter indicating ... change of server address was coming. Changed my settings and .... voila !

Hope you are not tearing your hair out, and at least one benefit comes from it ... should this arise again, you will know what a likely culprit issue might be.

Many thanks again,

Humbly,

I have very little hair left to tear out :-)g . I'm just glad that you discovered the cause before you tried to many "solutions." You can hopefully stay with Netscape for a long time.
