PCI error on startup.

Postby beanboy89 » Sat 15 Jan, 2005 4:32 pm

I just tried a Bootable Knoppix Linux Distro from a Live CD, and after I exited Linux to return to Windows, I got a strange error upon rebooting the computer. I hear two beeps, and then I get a message similar to this:
"ERROR
Resource Conflict - PCI in Slot 02
Bus:01, Device:09, Function:00

Press <F1> to Setup, <F2> to continue."
By pressing F1, it continues to the BIOS settings, and F2 will resume loading Windows normally. It happens each time I reboot the computer. I don't really have any idea what the error is about, or for that matter how to fix it.

System specs:
Pentium III
63 MB RAM
Windows 98 SE
HP Pavillion 8655C

Edit: It appears that maybe somthing is wrong with my sound card. I can't hear any sonud from my computer!

It appears that you have a resource conflict either on an interrupt request (IRQ), direct memory access (DMA) channel, or memory (I/O) range. Chances are it's conflicting with something else at the startup of your machine.

In Windows, go to Device Manager under System Properties and open up Properties for your sound card, then go to the Resources tab, and report back on what you see (I/O ranges, DMA channels, IRQs) including any conflicts that it's reporting.

Don, here is what I get from the Device Manager for my sound card. It does not appear to be reporting any conflicts.

That's interesting, the settings you have there. Most sound cards run either IRQ 5, 7, or 11, but I've never seen 9. Not that it makes any difference, though. If your BIOS allows you to do so (should allow if you have onboard sound), make sure the resource settings are the same in Windows as they are in the BIOS. It won't work if Windows uses IRQ 9 and your BIOS uses IRQ 7. I don't know why they might be different, but just in case check to see. Don't forget, even if you have onboard sound the integrated sound card can still be on the PCI bus.

Don, I just rebooted the computer to get into the BIOS to check the settings, as you suggested, but the computer booted normally, with no Resource Conflict errors. It seemed to be fixed. I then went and played some music files, and they played prefectly. Just to be sure, I restarted for a second time, and there was no errors. My sound is now working. But now I am just left with one question, how, did it fix itself? It seems a bit strange that the problem just repaired itself on its own!

Mystery of the unexplained, I guess? Hey, as long as it's fixed, that's good right?

Who knows, maybe it's possible that when you checked the settings in Device Manager it reset to the defaults and you clicked OK then restarted, and all was corrected. It could happen.
