PLEASE HELP - HOW DO I CONVERT .SNM FILES TO MICROSOFT FILES

Postby sagenyc » Thu 13 Mar, 2003 3:09 pm

Hi all,

I hope someone can help, this is driving me crazy!!! I installed Windows 98 several months ago (I had been using Windows 95). Unfortunately, I found that after installing Windows 98, my old stored e-mail l was no longer available in Netscape Messenger 4.7. I then figured that perhaps if I updated my Netscape Messenger software to somethiing newer this might correct the problem. I installed Netscape 7.0 and still the old messages were not available.

I could find the old e-mail folders by doing a files search, and when I tried to open them, I got a message saying "cannot find netscape.exe." I discovered information that said that Netscape.exe only exists in the Netscape Messenger 4.* series, so I deleted Netscape 7.0 and reinstalled Netscape 4.7. I do now have a netscape.exe file on my computer. I then attempted to manually drag the old mail folders from the desktop (where I moved them for easy access) into the mail browser (wouldn't work) and also from the desktop into the file tree that comes up when you use the my computer/c drive/explore option for your C: drive (this works).

However, I then found that not all the old e-mail folders were showing up in my mail browser, only a handful of them. This confounded me, so I did another file search, trying to find out the location of the folders that were showing up. Oddly, they weren't the ones I had dragged into the Windows/Mozilla/Application Data/profile/mail, etc... area, they were the ones that are on my desktop in my old user profile folder!!!. I then looked in this folder and discovered that indeed, not all of the folders were showing up. Luckily, i was able to find a common trait for the ones that did show up. These folders are identified with a windows icon and recognized as a windows folder. Unfortunately, (and this is no doubt the genesis of the problem) Windows 98 has converted all the other mail folders to .SNM files with Adobe Acrobat icons. When I try to open them, a box comes up that gives me a choice to open or save to disk and when I choose open, it does nothing.

So, it seems clear to me that if I can convert these Adobe .SNM files to Windows files and then put them in my old user profile folder on my desktop that I just might be able to retrieve them again. Does anyone know how to do this? Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks,
SAGE

I did not read your post in its entirety. It made me dizzy.
I do not know if there is any chance of recovery, let me tell you that you were approaching the problem in a wrong way, and you proceeded incorrectly making unwarranted assumptions.
If you look at any Netscape Mail file, it will have a file with an extention, which is .snm in 4.x, and .msf in 7.x. These are the so-called header files, which are not to be open or copied. The important stuff is in files with no extention, like Inbox, Sent. These file can be copied from one profile folder to another. When the pasting is done, they will replace the previous, identically named files. If such files are located anywhere other than in the original location, they can be copied to a Netscape profile mail folder.
If you had stored mail, the Inbox, which I assume you wanted, can copied to an active Netscape profile, but the file should be renamed to make sure that it does not replace the more recent file.
So, if you have an installed Netscape 4.7x, and you have the corresponding Users profile, there should be no problem. The User profiles contain mail from 4.7x, while the Profile folder contain mail from 7.x.
In order to have any connection between the mail and the program, a a required path must be followed. Where was your mail after the upgrade is very important, but I will not go into it. So, if you have only the .snm files, you are out of luck.
