Please Help Me Upgrade??

Postby cciaffone » Tue 13 Mar, 2012 11:51 am

Stuck at SM 2.0.11 and want to upgrade to a later version.

But when I do, I lose all my bookmarks.

Please give me some guidance, or point me to some help,
for upgrading SM from 2.0.11.

Do I need to "import" something (what?) or do I need to
create a "new" profile???

Hi cciaffone,

I haven't been here for a while, so I don't know if you've got an answer from somewhere else yet or not.

Anyway, copy your Mozilla Folder to your Desktop. Install the new SeaMonkey. After install, open the Mail Program. Up at the top is "Tools". Click on it and go down to "Import". Click on "Import Everything". Close out of SeaMonkey and restart. Everything should be there. If not, you've got a copy of your Mail and Bookmarks backed up so you didn't lose anything.

Take a read of this.
I think that 2.0.11's profile should be in the same neighborhood as that of the current 2.8's profile. But, if the bookmarks are the only issue, you should be able to Bookmarks|Manage Bookmarks|Tools|Export HTML (i.e. bookmarks.html).
I did download 2.0.11, and used a new profile. The profile for 2.0.11 is in the same folder as that of 2.8, so you should be able to use the 2.0.11 profile for 2.8. Only one word of caution. Your add-ons, if any, are likely to be incompatible, and you will have to get updated ones. As for 2.0.11, it told me that there is an update to 2.0.14.

I updated to 2.0.14, with no incident. Then, I was told that there was an update to 2.6.1. In each case, I had to download the installer from the Mozilla site. The new Seamonkey was installed in a different folder than the default SM, and I used a different profile. But, updating to 2.6.1 caused the disappearance of the contents of the bookmarks folder. The solution unexpected, but easy. From the Bookmarks|Manage Bookmarks|Tools|Import, I imported the bookmarks-backup.html file. Weird, because it was in the same profile folder. Everything seems in order, now.
And, checking for updates, tells me that 2.8 is the new update.
The moral of the story is that it is possible to update, with no problem, from 2.0.11 to 2.0.14, and from 2.6.1 to 2.8, but not from an earlier version to 2.6.1, or 2.8.
