Postby Antony » Mon 18 Nov, 2002 7:36 am

Dear all,

I would like to gather all of your recommendations about plugins. Yes, plugins for Netscape!

I would like to hear about plugins you've used, and your experience would be greatly appreciated. All Netscape compatible plugins are welcome, including plugins for Navigator 3, Communicator, Netscape 6/7.

Also, would you name some "must have" plugins, and "highly recommended" plugins.

Your contribution in this thread will help me build up coming new section of Netscape Browser Archive. Messages posted in this thread may be used in the new expanding section of Netscape Browser Archive. (usage of submissions)

With the exception of the ActiveX Plugin, my must have list is here.

EDIT: Since I only linked to what I consider to be a must have list, I suppose that allows you to only use the link, not the content? :)

That's a huge list, I wonder who's going to install all those plugins.

My recommended Plugins

Postby Antony » Mon 18 Nov, 2002 6:23 pm

Thanks for your recommendations.

My "must have" plugins:
Acrobat plugins
Flash
QuickTime

My "highly recommended" plugins:
RealPlayer (or RealOne)... if you enjoy online stream videos

Question:
What's the difference between Shockwave and Flash?
Anyone remember or used Live3D or something like that back in Navigator 3?

Flash content is made using Macromedia Flash, Shockwave is made in Macromedia Director. The programs capabilites are pretty much even, although flash is a bit more popular.

I may have more plugins than most people, and I can trace their lineage back to Netscape 4.5, in some cases. I do not install anything unless the program is upgraded, or it does not work. My plugin folder contain almost all the original files, kept up to date. So, my ritual is to copy one of the many folders, which I keep stashed away to the Netscape/Mozilla/Phoenix/kmeleon and I can face the world.
Vital for me, since I love to listen to music and at times videos are:
Real One
WMP 7.1 ,but I use Music Match 7.5 for .asx files
Quicktime 6, for videos.
Acrobat, sometimes.
Macromedia 8.5, I think
Crescendo or Beatnik preferred over the old Live-Connect.
I may have some other .dll files, but I never looked thoroghly into them.

Only referring to the most popular part (linked), not the entire list (Page 1,2,3).

Anyone want to share his/her stories (experiences) about plugins?

And anyone bought (I mean pay for) plugins, and why?

My vote on plugins:

1. RealPlayer Basic 8 (I hate the RealOne... it's way over commercialized)
2. Adobe Reader
3. Sun Java
