Pop-up ad blocking - the IE6 way!

Postby DJGM » Mon 14 Jul, 2003 5:06 pm

Apparently, IE6 on Windows XP Professional has a somewhat rather complicated method of
blocking unrequested popup windows. Well, it's not complicated for most advanced users,
but certainly a lot more complicated than the methods for blocking pop-ups in superior
browsers like Netscape, Mozilla Application Suite, Mozilla FireBird, Opera, Safari . . .

 Prevent Pop-up Ad Windows When Browsing with Internet Explorer.

It's an eight step guide! Now, who needs that, when this is much easier . . .

Humorous reply...

It's a 9-step process in Netscape to block all popup windows. :)

    click Edit
    click Preferences
    click Privacy & Security
    click Popup Windows
    click Allowed Sites
    click Remove All
    click OK
    check "Block Unrequested Popup Windows"
    click OK

In the spirit of competition, with Opera, it's only 1 mouse-click. :D

    Press F12,
    click "Refuse pop-up windows"

I looked at that Microsoft page.

Since popups do not display the space where one would normally type in a URL, how would one know which site to place in the Restricted Sites zone... :D

I thought it was on by default! (with a list of excluded sites.)

You are correct, it is.

In which case, it becomes (like IE) an 8-step process, since the Block Unrequested Popup Windows box is already checked.

Netscape's 8 step process is much easier than than 8 step process for IE!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For IE, selectively disable Active Scripting for certain sites . . .

1. Start Internet Explorer.

2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.

3. Click the Security tab.

4. Click Restricted Sites, and then click Sites.

5. In the Add this Web site to the zone box, type the Web address
for the site that you want to restrict, and then click Add. Repeat
this step if you want to add other sites to the zone.

6. Click OK.

7. Click Default Level to set the Restricted Sites zone to
the recommended level, which disables Active Scripting.

8. Click OK.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For Netscape . . .

Go to - Edit - Preferences - Privacy & Security - Popup Windows
Click Allowed Sites - click Remove All - Click OK - Click OK . . .

All done!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Neat Browser is not recommended. This product cost US$29.95 to register,
for what is nothing more than a 3rd party front end for IE, but with certain
features already found in real browsers like Mozilla, Netscape and Opera.

» Does Neat Browser support javascript ?
A: Yes, of course, it supports all scripts that Microsoft IE supported.

Therefore, it's vulnerable to all the same unpatched security holes as IE.

Why pay US$30 for this product, when you can it all (minus the dangerous
security holes) for free, in real browsers like Mozilla, Netscape and Opera?

SeaMonkey = Swiss Army Knife: It's versatile, reliable, and contains useful tools.
Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!
