Pop-up windows won't size correctly in Netscape 7.1

Postby Shirt_Lady » Thu 05 Aug, 2004 1:36 pm

I can't figure out why pop-up windows do not open to the size called for in a script file. Example width="620" height="420" all my pop-up windows open much smaller. I use pop-up windows on me web site and they are viewed correctly in IE but not Netscape. Any idea how to fix this problem

This would actually be a plus, since Netscape can open a smaller windows faster than a larger one.
Speaking of which, Netscape 7.1 has a pop-up blocker, so you don't have to deal with pop-ups.

At least we do not have to deal with the popups. So, to Shirt_Lady: if you feel that the popup is important, you should have a warning for people to allow your site, if they want to see everything.
And, poup toolbar are becoming common in IE as well.

Pop-up windows won't size correctly in Netscape 7.1

Postby Shirt_Lady » Thu 05 Aug, 2004 3:25 pm

Actually, this is a problem if "resizeable=no" is in the pop-up window description. I can not read what is in the pop-up window because the width and height descriptions are being ignored by Netscape and "resizeabe is set to no. I did not have this problem in Netscape 4.79. I need to fix the problem or stop using Netscape. Many of my suppliers use pop-up windows with detailed info and I can't read them. How can I get Netscape 7.1 to do exactly as a script is calling for?

Sorry, I have not done any web page since before NS6.x came out. The 6/7 and the Mozilla differ from the earlier Netscapes and IE, because they adhere to code, and that can cause problem. The best I can do is to give you this link, http://www.w3.org/ and good luck.

I believe you can let pop-ups open in tabs so you can see the fully with an extension. (I believe it was the Multizilla extension, but I'm not sure.)

That can be done with Mozilla releases that are later than (I think, but at least) Mozilla 1.4.

I've heard reports before, that windows are opened smaller than the size specified in the window.open() script. To those to whom it happens, it seems to happen all the time. I don't know why. Windows larger than a couple hundred pixels always open to the exact size for me. Some things to try:

  • Does it happen at all window sizes? Or just a certain range of sizes?
  • How small is the window? A dozen pixels too small in each dimension? 100? If it's in the range of a dozen and you're displaying images, could it be that the window is actually the correct size but looks too small because the top-left offset of the image is different?
  • I imagine you're using width/height. Do either of outerWidth/outerHeight or innerWidth/innerHeight work better? Obviously compatibility with IE constrains your permanent choice, but it would be interesting to know whether this affects the accuracy of window sizes.
  • Try a new profile, just temporarily to see if it fixes the problem. While using a new profile you're using a fresh set of prefs and saved state. So if the problem is caused by some accumulated setting that somehow overrides the window size, this experiment will demonstrate that and bring us closer to understanding the cause of the problem.

Pop-up windows won't size correctly in Netscape 7.1

Postby Shirt_Lady » Fri 06 Aug, 2004 8:23 am

First, I want to say "Thank You" to those who have tried to help me solve the problem. Second, I found the problem and it is now fixed. I did not have a boxed checked: Preferences/Advanced/Scripts & Plugins: Allow scripts to move or resize existing windows. I checked the box and now it's working fine. Such a small problem with a big headache to go along with it. Again, thank you, you all are great!

Shirt_Lady: Thanks for writing back and telling us what the problem was. I'll ask that question first next time :)

I am not so sure that I would have solved the problem without the settings in front of me, and even then I may have not, because of my inexperience with web page design. I keep all boxes checked (by default).
Congratulations to Shirt_Lady.
