Presenting: Macfox!

Presenting Macfox. A customized version of Firefox tailored specifically to feel like a Mac application. What does Macfox have that's not in Firefox 2.0?

  • A Mac-friendly user interface.
  • When you open a page, the progress is seen in the URL bar, like in Safari.
  • Combined Stop/Refresh button, again, like Safari.
  • A theme that's very similar to Safari.
  • Webpages have Aqua controls, as opposed to Windows Classic-style controls.

Macfox 0.1 (DMG, Universal Binary).

Macfox 0.1 requires a G4 processor or higher (The next version will work on a G3), and Mac OS X v10.3.9 or higher.

Why am I doing this? Simple. I like Safari's simple and easy-to-use user interface, however, recently, I've come across several websites which simply do not work right in Safari. For example, searches on Fanfiction.net don't show up at all. And YouTube crashes Safari whenever I try to upload a video. This way, I can have the best of both worlds.

Sound interesting. However,

You forgot to set the MIME type for the server.

Safari has never crashed on YouTube for me. Well, I can only afford the Safari that came with Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger with the free updates from Apple, not the bleeding edge version.

Have you ever uploaded a video to YouTube? And I'm talking about the version that comes with Tiger. I don't have Leopard installed at the moment, since it breaks some critical apps.

Sounds cool. I'll check it out when I'm next running Mac OS X. But, there is one thing I don't like straightaway . . .

Pu7o wrote:[*]Combined Stop/Refresh button, again, like Safari.

If there's one thing that I've always found to be annoying and unnecessary in browser UI design, it's this.
Having a button that can change from one function to another mid-click is very annoying. This is a bad
trend that Opera started, then Safari copied it, and Netscape 8.x followed. Even IE7 nearly had this,
annoying "feature", but it was dropped at some point during the early test builds. If anything, it's
probably the only thing Microsoft actually got right in the UI design of IE7!

I'm hoping Firefox or SeaMonkey don't eventually combine the Stop/Reload functions into one button for
the sake of a bit of saved space on the toolbar. It'd be best offered as an add-on, rather than built in.
UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1) Gecko/20061101 SeaMonkey/1.1b
SeaMonkey = Swiss Army Knife: It's versatile, reliable, and contains useful tools.
Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!

Yes, quite a few. All uploaded through Safari.

Want to see my YouTube list?

Somehow, I have a feeling it'd be full of the Carlson Twins... :P

It's still strange that it doesn't crash though. It crashed twice with me, and I *am* using the version of Safari that comes with Tiger. I wouldn't complain about crashes on an unstable version.

Also, if you want to disable the stop-reload-combined thingy, you can type this in the terminal:
Code: Select all
rm -vf /Applications/Macfox.app/Contents/Resources/BonEcho.app/Contents/MacOS/chrome/stopreload.manifest

This, of course, assuming that Macfox is in [tt]/Applications[/tt]. If it is not, you can adapt the command accordingly. A note that this is a workaround, not something "official".

Pu7o,

Do you have an HTML page (fixed like) about Macfox? (Or shall I just use this thread?) So I can post it in MozInfo701?

BTW, are you ending (discontinuing) your Firescape project?

I like the idea of combining Stop and Reload buttons, saving space!

If possible, please remove the unnecessary right pointing triangle next to location bar.

Aqua controls look good.

A stupid, annoying, absolutely unnecessary "feature" that only saves a very tiny bit of space on the main toolbar!
Whoever originally thought up the idea of the combined stop/reload button should hang their head in shame

I'll agree with this, the "Go" button has always been a pointless UI addition ever since Microsoft first added it
to IE. It's easier to press Enter after typing a URL, rather than clicking a button next to the Location Bar.

Just to point out that there's a Firefox add-on named macfox II which is designed for, well, Windows only.
