Probelms Fitting New IDE HDD

Postby redhotjoe » Fri 04 Jun, 2004 7:03 am

I purchased a new 80GB hard drive and cannot get my computer to identify it. I am fitting it along side another drive, a 10GB drive which is set to 'Primary Master' IDE using the jumper. I have set the new drive to 'Slave with Master' setting but it will not load any further than the initial loading balck screens after the POST check. I went into the BIOS and set all Primary and Secondary IDE's to auto detect. What ever I set it will not go past the back starting screen. I can set the Bios 'Primary Slave' IDE to 'NONE' and it will then continue to boot.

Can any one please help

So the computer won't detect it the second drive at all?? This depends on the style of cable, but if the computer won't find it, try flipping upside down, the jumper able that leads from your old drive to the new one. Some you cannot flip, but one of my machines did a smimular thing so i flipped it and it worked. the problem could also be the way its hooked up. See if my suggestion is usable, and if it is, try it and let me know if it works. If not. i might have another suggestion.

Keith.

Sensing New HDD

Not quite 100% sure Iknow what U mean by 'Try Flipping' Do you mean Plug the 40/80 Pin conector to the new drive first then the origional on plug into the middle connector?? By the way, when I check dives in Device manager it is there, it just will not continue through the boot stage when this is fittted. When change the bios settings to detect NONE it boots and I went into the Device nmanager then it was there, boot not when I click on the My Computer Icon

many thanks

Well, you could hook up the new drive first, then run the second off, but i don't know if that would help. I was talking about flipping the cable upside down, ( make sure the red line on the cable is closer to the motehrboard). Some cables can turn eitehr way. I hope that makes sense. If that doesn't work, or it is not possible to flip the cable ( old drive to the new drive) try running another cable from COM 2 on the mother board to the new drive ( if COM2 is used, there might be a COM 3.

Sorry that is alot of information, not organized very well. If you want me to attempt to re organize it, i will. or tell you one thing at once.
Hope i am of help.

most of the time you need to have 2 of the same type of hard drives, turn your cable like Keith said and if that doesn't work try to just dissconnect your old hard drive and get the other one 2 boot by it self and see if it works.
