Problem exporting a large 4.7 Address Book.

Postby KD6VIZ » Sun 07 Dec, 2003 8:27 am

I'm trying to convert a large 4.7 address book (1.7 mb) to NS 7.1

When I use export from NS 4.79 to a LDIF file. This results in about 52 entries exported then it hangs. The small LDIF file that was created can be successfully imported into NS 7.1... This is about 1/3 of the entries in the 4.79 address book.

There appears to be bad entries in the 4.79 address book. There is one icon and several blank lines in the display of the address book under 4.79... These lines or the icon cannot be selected.

I tried to delete 1/3 of the address book and then export to a LDIF. When I scroll throught the address book the display window is blank once I scroll backwards. I can cause a entry to re-appear when I select one these blank lines. This makes it diffcult to delete entries....

I installed DAWN 5.2 and attempted to "import" this large 4.7 address book. DAWN fails by hanging without any messages....

Are there any other utilites that can "clean up" the address book?

Is there a method to print or cut/paste the address book in NS 4.79 ?

Here is something you can try

Open Netscape 4.79 and go to the Address book. Create a new address book named abook1 or whatever you like. Once the new "abook1" appears in the left pane, you can copy all of the addresses from the existing address book into the new book using drag and drop as follows:

1. Select the existing address book in the left pane.
2. In the right pane, select the first and last entries while holding down the shift key, to select all entries.
3. Click inside the block of addresses and hold down the mouse key while dragging the block to the new address book in the left pane.

Once all the addresses have been dropped into the new address book, see if you can export the new abook1 as ldif.

If you don't have mailing lists to worry about (mailing list entries must correspond to an existing address in each book) and if the above doesn't work, you can create three separate new address books, abook1, abook2 and abook3, and copy 1/3 of the addresses into each new book. then Export each new address book as a separate ldif file.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the help...

I was able to get most of the entries from the 4.79 AB by:

1. Sorting the AB in asending order and exporting to a CSV file.
2. Sorting the AB in desending oders and exporting to another CSV file.
3. Importing these CSV files into the NS 7.1 AB.

Each export copied part of the AB and hung. By combining the 2 files, resulted in 95% of the entries transfered. However, only the name and email address info was transfered. The company and nickname info was lost.

I also tested this process using LDIF files. This method transfered less
entries. However, the company and nickname info was inculded. I felt it was easier to add the company and nickname where needed.

I find that having a single huge address book is very difficult to manage, and, generally unsettling. It is a pain to import several AB, but much less than the problems you get into. But, it is interesting to compare the results with .cvs vs .ldif. I went through what you did, and generally gave up on some addresses.
