Problem with Netscape 7.2 email

Postby billstrib » Mon 01 Jan, 2007 3:50 pm

I have been using Netscape 7.2 with AT&T DSL for several months with no problem. Suddenly, yesterday I get an error message when trying to check my email. The message is: "An error occurred with the POP3 mail server", and no other info is given regarding the error. I checked all my account settings, POP server info, etc. All is correct. I deleted the inbox in case it was corrupted, but this did not fix it. Any ideas out there?

I had a similar problem with my ISP email service. The now make you change something so that it checks your id, and password, to stop a virus from doing a mass mailing "behind yur back" so to speak. I'd check with your ISP provider as to what options have to be changed, my ISP support guy walked me thru it, but I don't remember what all we did.

I hoep this helps.

Fixed the Netscape email problem!

Postby billstrib » Wed 24 Jan, 2007 5:43 am

After over a month, I finally discovered what was blocking my incoming email. It was my firewall! I should have tried that long ago, but since the rest of Netscape worked normally, I never thought about the firewall. Thanks to my brother for the tip! My Netscape 7.2 is now working 100% now and I am a happy camper!

Just to help others who may have not thought of a firewall. Which firewall?

Fixed email problem with Netscape 7.2

Postby billstrib » Wed 24 Jan, 2007 7:04 pm

I am using the free version of the Zone Alarm firewall. It is a very good firewall, but I must have accidently "denied" Netscape from retrieving email one day (and saved the setting), not realizing what program Zone Alarm was alerting me to. It took a while to find the problem in the lock-out log that Zone Alarm keeps, because it was not flagged as a Netscape module.

I used to be a great believer of Zone Alarm, but their updates since v.4 have been rife of problems. Twice I was locked out of ISP, for no good reason. Fortunately, my ISP tech knews about it, and bailed me out. The crowning blow came when ZA started looking at my mail, and converted all my .zip attachments to one of their own. This should have not happened with the free version, but it did. I am using now Sygate, which has not been updated in years, but has been trouble-free.

Zone Alarm firewall

Postby billstrib » Fri 26 Jan, 2007 6:12 am

So far, other than my own mistake with Zone Alarm, I have not experienced any other problems. I really like the way Zone Alarm notifies you of everything taking place. I am not real familiar with any other firewalls. Do others notify you of activity like Zone Alarm does? At the first sign of trouble, I will remember your input and I will also start researching other fire walls. Many Thanks!

I had ZA, and whatever you like, i.e. notification of activity, really bugged me, since I did not know what it meant, so I disabled the feature. Yes, you can set up a feature like that with other firewalls.
I was a firm believer of ZA, and had it for over three years with no problem, but things started getting worse the more features they started offerings, so I bailed out. In all, it is an excellent firewall, but you have to watch every upgrade. In fact, I had gotten so leery that I would do nothing until I visited their newsgroup several times. Byut, it got me in a way that no one else had experienced.
