Problems with Mail

Postby Fulvio » Thu 03 Mar, 2011 1:13 pm

I have had problems sending mail with TB and SM. I first got a popup saying that there was a problem with the POP3 server(
An error occurred with the POP3 mail server. Mail server pop.central.cox.net responded:
). After saying ok, write the e-mail, and trying to send I got this:
An error occurred sending mail: The mail server sent an incorrect greeting: concurrent connection limit in avast! exceeded(pass:0, processes:thunderbird.exe[50]).
Avast is my antivirus. After saying ok, I got another popup saying that my message sending was terminated midway, and to contact my provider.
I had actually spoken to a tech person, and was told to try Outlook Express, and their Webmail. In each case, the message was sent instantly, so the conclusion was that there was a glitch with my mail program. So far, I have had several issues with Thunderbird, requiring me to authenticate (never needed in the past), but not once with Seamonkey.
I could not find anything special in Avast, other that the incorrect SMTP, provided, courtesy, of the original TB3.x set up. I corrected it, with no success.

Which TB - 2 or 3?
How long has this been occurring? Consistent, or sporadic?
What, if anything, is different about the failed Sends vs. ones that go OK?
What is the nature of the aborted emails - simple text, Forward, with Attachment(s); short, long?

The word "thread', as used in the error message you have, would refer to the number of 'concurrent lines of communication', or 'conversations in parallel', between your computer and the server. And if the AV is monitoring these then apparently it became overwhelmed by the traffic.

The word 'thread' also is used in programming to mean a task process. See 'multithreading' in Wikipedia.

Using the Config Editor and filtering for 'thread':
- in TB2 there are 2 lines pertaining to mail. (and 3 for mailnews.)
- in TB3 there are 5 lines for mail. (and 6 for mailnews.)
Most of these are Boolean settings - On or Off / True or False.

I don't know which definition, if either, these 'thread' lines apply to.
You could try selectively flipping these switches, one at a time, and observe results.
Also try disabling having AV monitor outgoing mail - or mail at all if that is the only option.
(The TB setting for AV monitoring is for incoming mail only. Shouldn't affect outgoing.)

Webmail success is irrelevant. OE is a valid comparison. But, yes, this appears to be a TB vs AV wrinkle.

Edit addition - Should have done some research first.
Is your computer multi-cored?

Correction. The problem with OE, today was even worse, because it brought up the error in Thunderbird, and would not let proceed from there.
Solution, I called tech support, and the fellow wanted me to uninstall/reinstall all programs. I did not want to do that. As an alternative I suggested that I reset the password of the problem account. It did no good.
So, I thought that I should reboot the computer, and did. Immediately, OE started downloading messages, and, after replacing the password with the reset one, all other programs worked, and I was able to send test messages from my account in Thunderbird and Seamonkey.
I started having problems when I had a total breakdown of the same account in TB3.1.x. I removed, and added back. That's when TB started entering outlandish server settings. I was able to get things straightened out with a manual set up.
My feeling is that, possibly the incorrect SMTP listed in Avast created some problems. I corrected the settings, but it seems that I needed to reboot. Everything is ok now.

Fulvio - Have you looked at Claws Mail? It's been ported over to Windows and has a menu selection (in the Linux version, it's Tools/Network Log (or SHIFT-CTRL-L)) to display the actual connection logs to the mail server (to diagnose what may have caused a problem).
