Profman's "Slim" Public Release NS7.02 Testing

Postby profman » Wed 12 Mar, 2003 3:40 pm

Antony has graciously allowed me to house some of my CCK distributions on his FTP server. I attempt to make my distributions very basic, flexible, and useful. I do not emphasize instant messaging. The brave-in-heart may wish to test this release and give me any feedback. Profman's "Slim" Public version of Netscape 7.02 are now available for testing by downloading at:

ftp://ftp.sillydog.org/usr/profman/NS70 ... Public.exe

The "readme.txt" file is available at:

ftp://ftp.sillydog.org/usr/profman/NS70 ... readme.txt

I "hope" to (someday) set up a web page that details this distribution plus my other interests.

In the meantime some of the salient features of the "Slim" Public release are:
Profman's "Slim" Public Netscape Distribution, NS702_Public.exe, less than 13.5 MB download.

Components Included/Omitted:

1. Navigator/Composer - YES, MANDATORY
2. Mail/News - YES, chosen by default
3. Classic Skin - YES, chosen by default, but not applied
4. Spell Checker - YES, chosen by default
5. Macromedia Flash - YES, version 6.0 r67, chosen by default
6. Activation - YES, can be canceled
7. Instant Messenger - YES, OPTIONAL, always unchecked by default
8. Sun JAVA2 - NO, links for download included
9. Quality Feedback Agent - NO
10. AOL ART Extension - NO
11. Real Player 8 - NO
12. Viewpoint Media Player - NO
13. Winamp - NO
14. HP Printer Identifier Plugin - NO
15. Canadian Regional Pack - NO
16. AOL on Desktop - NO

The "Custom Install" is chosen by default in my package. All "YES" components, except Navigator/Composer, may be selected or unselected in the "Custom Install." The "recommended Install" will install, without asking, all the YES components, except for Instant Messenger, which is an unchosen option (which may be chosen).

Netscape has a Quick Launch feature which has typically caused more trouble than its worth. Quick Launch is one of the first things to disable when you are having certain problems. The Quick Launch Dialog is omitted in my installation package, although you may enable this feature in the browser after installation.

New profiles of this version will have some bookmarks already set for them. These may be changed or deleted. The Personal Toolbar has links to SillyDog (a repository of Netscape versions and knowledge), The LangaList Newsletter, and the Lurker's Guide to Babylon 5 (a great Sci-Fi TV show). There are five other bookmarks listed in "profman's best links" in the bookmarks file. These bookmarks will not show up in established profiles.

The value of the "Slim" distribution is only in the user's mind. This distribution is not designed to replace any other CCK version to which it may be similar. It reflects my likes, dislikes, and a neat hobby. My other distributions, which I may later place on the FTP server, are versions customized to be used at Cedarville University, although, after changing the proxy setting and homepage, they could be used anywhere. I have Netscape 7.01/7.02 versions tested or running on five systems (Windows 2000 and Windows 98 ).

Hi profman,

Is there any specific feedback that you would like?

Just installed your "Slim" Release and certainly no problems with the install.

Antony suggested that I do some internal testing before I make a "public" release. I first want to be sure that the version can be downloaded, installed, and operated correctly. After that, I would want to check that the Mail/News and IM components are functional, although I do not want anyone to mess up their system testing this. Finally, feel free to make any comments about features, bookmarks, documentation, and appearance that you would like to see in the next release.

This NS 7.02 release is based on my experience with my 7.01 version which has proven quite stable on several Win 2000 and Win 98 systems. I have tested two versions of my NS 7.02 release, and, so far, it looks OK.

And, thanks!

O.K., great! I have six Mail Accounts, and five News Servers, so that should be a good test case for you. Only one Netscape Profile, however, unlike our resident PROFILE KING.

I don't do IM, so I won't be able to give you any feed back there. If the user has a stable Profile, then your Slim Release should do very well.

Hi,
Both the navigator and composer works fine with no problems at all.

I currently don't have much time these few days sorry. I will test it when I have time.
BTW, what was the downloading speed?

It was very, very, slooooooooooooooow. But then of course, so is my connection rate. I downloaded at 2.5 KB/sec.

I downloaded it at 25.9Kbps. As I'm on a 1Mbps broadband internet, it
ought to download at around 100Kbps. This really doesn't bode well for
the already tarnished reputation of Microsoft based internet servers . . !

Having said that, I haven't had a chance to test profman's CCK'd "Slim"
build of Netscape 7.02 yet, but I'll report back here as soon as I have.

I have added several files to my ftp directory. I have added the Cedarville University Faculty and Student Versions. The Student Version is much like the Public Version while the Faculty Version has had Instant Messenger removed, although Mail/News is still an option. I am not formally asking for testing of these University versions since they are designed for internal University usage; however, anyone who wants to may download these versions for home use. All you have to do is change the proxy setting back to a direct connection and choose a home page different from the default.

I have also added short descriptive text files for each distribution. These are in addition to the readme.txt files which also accompany each Version.

ftp://ftp.sillydog.org/usr/profman/NS70 ... Public.exe
ftp://ftp.sillydog.org/usr/profman/NS70 ... public.txt
ftp://ftp.sillydog.org/usr/profman/NS70 ... readme.txt

ftp://ftp.sillydog.org/usr/profman/NSCe ... aculty.exe
ftp://ftp.sillydog.org/usr/profman/NSCe ... aculty.txt
ftp://ftp.sillydog.org/usr/profman/NSCe ... readme.txt

ftp://ftp.sillydog.org/usr/profman/NSCe ... tudent.exe
ftp://ftp.sillydog.org/usr/profman/NSCe ... tudent.txt
ftp://ftp.sillydog.org/usr/profman/NSCe ... readme.txt

I'll probably announce the release of my Public Version by some time next week if I do not get feedback about something that should be changed.

Thank you all for the feedback so far!

The location of the final release will probably remain the same as above (or similar) unless I decide to change some things.

Thanks again!

profman,

After using your CCK Version for nine days, I found it to be rock solid. The Mail & Newsgroups did not falter, no other Profile problems, no crashes, everything worked as it should. I give it a 10 for stability.
