prrmission in linux

one file /var/log/maillog in linux enterprise edition 4.0
only root user can see this file
i cant see this file..i dont have permission...pls advice me how can i set permission to see this particular file through my own login. my login is local32 and group is also local32
also take care that other user should not see this file..except me and root

I assume by "Linux Enterprise Edition 4.0" You're referring to RedHat? It's been a long time since I've used RedHat, but I use Ubuntu Linux as my primary OS. The easiest way for you to reset file permissions would be to login as root when you startup the system (this may or may not be possible; you may have to check "Allow Root to Login Using GDM" (or something similar) in the login settings) and browse to /var/log. If you right-click maillog and select properties, you should be able to change permissions to allow local32 to read/write/execute. Note: if you do have to change settings to allow root login, make sure you change it back, the setting can create a serious security vulnerability.
