Question: removing norton antivirus try& buy

Postby shaney » Mon 16 Jun, 2003 4:40 pm

Hoping someone can help.

I can't remove norton antivirus. I visited the Symantec website downloaded the instructions for removal after unsuccessfully trying to remove it from add/remove programs. I deleted all registry files as stated and had to restart my computer. Once it had rebooted I had lost my cable connection. My ip add. was GONE, I tried doing various things with the modem and network etc but to no avail. I had to do a sys restore to get my connection back and of course norton came back with it. Ever since then when I've tried to remove the program I am unable to do so without losing my connection.

Does anyone know how I can remove this successfully?

Thank you, sorry about the wordy read.

The easiest way, in my thinking, is to re-install the same program (Norton), reboot, un-install that program, and reboot. This often works unless some residue left behind prevents a re-install. You could always restore if this leads to a problem.

BTW, any chance of restoring to a point before you installed Norton, or would cause too many other problems? You should also note that I do NOT yet have any experience with Windows XP.

Did you have only the AV, or the entire System, or whatever you call it with Firewall? Are you disabling the monster, before uninstalling.
I am thinking Firewall, because something like your problem happened when I tried to upgrade Zone Alarm Firewall. It did not work right, and when I uninstalled it , I lost my cable, and IP. It took me almost half a day to get back in, thank to a cable company tech who was familiar with such problems.
Even if your problem is not firewall-relasted, it is not fun.
Reinstalling, may or may not work, but, it sounds like the best bet.
Let us know how you did.

RE: norton never-be-gone

First off, thank you both for your reply.

I downloaded the software again which is just the antivirus software without the firewall, tried to reinstall (which it would not allow me to do but gave me the option of "unistalling" instead). I "uninstalled" and once again lost my ip and cable connection.

I don't have sys restore before the installation of norton, I had to disable it the other day (urghh)

Anyway, any other ideas would be greatly appreciated, if not I guess I'm stuck with it?

Thank you again! =)

I don't know XP, but I suggest you turn off its file protection system before you try to remove files and registry entries. Plainly, you are leaving something in the registry if you can't do a proper removal through the add/remove programs function. I checked the Symantec site.... I suggest you review this again and see if the utility will work.
