So, you only count the
28.2 km (17.5 miles) while ignoring the
reminding 620+ km? Which my math indicated that you were able to travel at average of

I am sure you are aware that 28.2 km was only
4.3% of the trip. Or in other words, you ignored the 95%+ of the trip.
Although I was
not an A+ student, my math was not that bad.

I can give you a few different answers on this. I think I can drop the “magic glasses” version.
Basically, as long as you can speak some basic greetings (I consider
just some basic greetings as
not able to speak English), you can still live in Australia comfortably. As being reported by TV (and agreed by a number of my friends), there are many areas where you don't really need to speak English. The TV report also pointed out that people living there have no interests in learning English.
