Re-Install of NS7 when 7.01 is released

Postby humpd » Thu 05 Dec, 2002 9:50 am

I made a mistake when I installed NS7 into the old communicator folder rather than installing it in its own folder. Can I install NS 7.01 (when it is released) to a separate folder? If so, will it automatically import the profiles found in NS 7 (including mail, bookmarks, etc) or will I have to do some file moving?

The profiles are kept in a separate location and are not normally removed even when you uninstall Netscape. So Netscape 7.01 should find those profiles. The problem will be that installing 7.01 to a separate folder will result in you having three versions of Netscape, 4.x, 7.00, AND 7.01.

I suspect that you should probably uninstall 7.00 before installing 7.01. As mentioned above, your Netscape 7.00 profiles will survive. I'm fairly sure, but not positive that Netscape 4.x will survive this without harm.

My recommendation:

1. Uninstall Netscape 7.00

2. Check Netscape 4.x to see if it is still working. If 4.x has problems, you may wish to re-install it (to the same location it was before). I recommend keeping 4.x around, just in case. Uninstall it if you must.

3. Install Netscape 7.01 to another directory, the default location is usually fine.

Help for a Clean Install and Custom install can be found at Ramona's site at:

You normally do not need to worry about editing the Windows registry.

So, you had NS7, all over the place? I never expected that either, and probably it will cause no harm. You have two choices. One is to uninstall NS7, which will leave some files behind, including plugins. And, then 7.01 will be spread out all over, but it should pick up what is left from 7.0. Option 2 is to install 7.01 in a different folder. You can even chose Program File/Netscape/Netscape7.01 as destination. Then you will have some tidiness, but you will have to copy the NS7.0 plugins folder to the 7.01 folder. Its plugins folder will be overwritten, with your approval. Option 2a is to install 7.01 in a totally new folder, which you can select. As long as you use the Add/Remove method, you will have no problem with any profile. But, if you delete the Netscape folder, you would lose everything.
My solution, if you care: 1. I had already relocated all profiles, including 4.8's.
2.I copied the Communicator folder in a safe location.
3. I deleted the entire Netscape folder in Program Files. The Netscape folder recreates.
4. I copied again the Communicator folder into the Netscape folder.
5. I installed again in a c:\Netscape7.01 folder.
I could afford the "delete" because I had more than one copy of Netscape7.01.
Don't do it my way. I have five copies of NS7.0 or 7.01, so what if I lose one?

Ns7

Postby humpd » Thu 05 Dec, 2002 1:53 pm

Here is my current folder set up in regards to Netscape:
Netscape > Communicator > Netscape (this is NS7). Can I simply CUT the last NS folder (NS7) and put it into a NS7 folder on its own? If I can do that, what steps will I have to take to get the NS shortcut to load the browser when I connect to my DSL? It seems to me that this way, I can delete NS 4.7 without deleting NS7 and have everyting still work until NS7.01 comes out. Any thoughts?
Thanks for the responses, by the way.

I do not believe you can just move the netscape folders. There are things in the registery and stuff like that.

You shouldn't move Netscape (programme) folders, but for profile folders, basically you can, with some changes to the file locations.

It would be simplest, based on your messages, just to uninstall (use the Remove Software feature in Windows) both Netscape 4.x and 7.00. Reboot after each uninstall. Now delete all Netscape directories that you no longer want (if there are any) since most registry references should be gone. Follow the Clean Install instructions referenced above which are very simple. Then, re-install 7.00 in a location that suites your fancy.

None of this will affect your Netscape 7 profile, including mail, news, or bookmarks, since the profile is normally kept in a totally different location.

Myself, I would just keep things where they are UNTIL Netscape 7.01 comes out. Why fix something that ain't broke?
