Reformatting from XP back to Windows 98

Postby David0 » Sun 25 May, 2003 5:34 pm

Hello,
I was wondering, I need to reformat the whole computer... (split into drive c, d, e,) and here is why.

I installed XP and the computer just isnt meant for XP, it is barely capable, and it slows down the whole computer....

I have reformatted a computer before but that was from 98 to 98 so I am not sure how to do if from XP to 98

Can anyone help me out??? Thanks a ton!

email me if you can !

You need a Win98 boot disk. Go here and grab both files. The imz extension file is a bootable Win98SE floppy disk that you can create using WinImage (the other file). You will need WinZip, or similar, to extract the program and assorted files for WinImage.

1) Boot using the Win98 floppy,
2) run fdisk to delete all current partitions and regain a single large partition,
3) using fdisk, recreate the partitions the way you want,
4) Make the first partition a boot partition,
5) Shut down and re-start (cold-boot),
6) Format the C: drive with a system,
7) Install Windows.

Hope that is what you were looking for. Hope the WinXP you used will eventually find its way to another computer. I would hate to think that Bill got a free lunch from anyone.

here it is ....
1). If ur XP installed using NTFS file system u better clean it up ( reformatted ) with XP BootCD, and choose "Quick Format with FAT 32" and then wait untill the system finish format your HD. And then reboot yoru Computer.
2). If your XP installed with FAT-32, the only way you should do is just put the win98 BootCD and format the HD with " A:\ Format C:/s" and setup the win98.

You all make this sound very complicated! But, it's actually really EASY!

Firstly, back up all your data.

Then pop your Win98 CD in, and reboot.
When asked, load from the CD with CD support. The dos prompt appears, run FDISK and delete all partitions
Ctrl+Alt+Delete and the computer reboots. Start win98 setup from the CD. Win98 setup will make a partition and format it, then reboot the machine.
Then run setup again and the Win98 setup will start again, and install Windows.

If you haven't reformatted yet, let me add my 2 cents. Your hard drive is split into 3 partitions. You only need to reformat the C: partition which contains the XP operating system. However, if the D and E partitions are formatted as NTFS, then you must convert those to FAT32 before you rid the machine of XP. Windows 98 only works with FAT and FAT32.

Once the D and E partitions are formatted to FAT32, and you have backed up your data, use a program called Partition Magic to remove the XP partition. Then create your new W98 partition, format it as FAT32, and then reboot and load W98 from the CD-ROM. Partition Magic is easier to use the FDISK (a DOS program), as well as more powerful. If all you have is FDISK, it will work, but pay close attention to the menu selections.
