Remove AOL from CCK

Postby awreneau » Wed 11 Aug, 2004 3:23 pm

I'm new to the CCK but I have used IEAK and ISPWizzard successfully however being the MS products are coninually targeted I wanted to give Netscape a try.

Like it so for, I can say that it's easier than IEAK and faster, however I work for an ISP and I dont want AOL plastered all over the sidebars and desktop icons or anywhere else for that matter. I've dug around in the "Guide to customizing and distributing Nestcape 7.0" to no avail.

How does one get rid of the AOL junk? I have disabled the activation and similar items.

Thanks

I would think that you would have to unzip the CCK.XPI file with a ZIP utility, then delete the AOD.XPI file contained within it, and then edit the AOD tool out of config.ini.

SillyDog701's Netscape Streamline does not have AOL stuff.

According to CCK's license agreement, you may not remove any default search entries that come with Netscape.

Ok, thats a good reason not to distribute Netscape, maybe I'm missing the point but as an ISP why would I promote AOL to my existing customers. Whats the point of customizing Netscape WITH AOL?

Or...am I totally missing the boat? :twisted: :?:

CCK license does allow you to remove the AOL components, including AOL on Desktop (icon), and the method is documented.

What I said is the default links of searches may not be customised.

If you are not happy with at, don't waste your time.

NETSCAPE 7 CLIENT CUSTOMIZATION KIT LICENSE AGREEMENT wrote:3. RESTRICTIONS. Except as otherwise expressly permitted in this
Agreement or another Netscape agreement to which Licensee is a party,
Licensee may not: (a) configure preferences other than those available for

folder, and may not remove or modify the contents of those folders; (ii) may

the "News" tab); (iii) may not remove the "Search" Sidebar tab, and "Today's

Also, since you said you read the "Guide to Customizing and Distributing Netscape 7.0", it said explicitly on page 124,
    Important Legal Restrictions
  • Remove the Search and Directory folder or the Insider Netscape folder from their default locations in the Bookmarks menu when you open a new profile with Netscape 7.0
  • Remove or modify the contents of the Search and Directory folder or the Inside Netscape folder in the Bookmarks menu.
  • Change the Sidebar tab that is open by default when you open a new profile with Netscape 7.0 (currently the News tab).
  • Remove the Search or Today's Tips sidebar tabs from the My Sidebar tabs shown by default when you open a new profile with Netscape 7.0
  • Remove any of the Sidebar tabs from the list of tabs available to an end user in the default drop-down list of sidebar tabs available when you open a new profile with Netscape 7.0. (It's OK to add additional tabs.)
  • Change the default Search service to which the Location Bar Search button and other search services are linked.
  • Change the page that opens by default when Mail starts up.

Please make sure you read them first before your rant.

I guess I misunderstood your post; it is very much worth my time. I also said I dug around in the documentation, I have not read it in it's entirety.

Thanks for the insight.

Yes, remove the NIM.XPI file from CCK.XPI, and then remove the "Component NIM" from config.ini.

In your case, you might want to distribute Mozilla instead of Netscape.

All discussion relating to CCK and customising Netscape should go to Customised section.

I'm at a loss here, I understand that cck.xpi is part of the CCK tool and when you install it the program extracts the cck.xpi file. However after isntalling the cck tool I'm unable to locate cck.xpi.

Help?

***edit***

I thought about distributing mozilla but it's not "main stream" like Netscape and IE are, Open Source is only used in our NOC not for our customers. The powers that be often frown on something new to introduce our customers to, at least in this regard.

Ok, rethinking my position on Mozilla.

However the CCK escapes me, I see where I have to download WinCVS, Python and a few other tools. This seems a bit involved for customizing, I have also read about the CCK and see screen shots but I cant find the download as of yet.

Can anybody point mt eo the site where I might download this tool.

Thanks

I'm not sure how to change the sidebars, but to prevent the AOL On Desktop icons from being created you can remove the package from the install. This is easy enough just edit your CONFIG.INI after creating the package with the CCK and comment out the line for the AOD/IOD in the setup type and set the attributes for the package to DISABLED or UNSELECTED.

Here, check it out:
[tt]
; at least one Setup Type needs to be set, and up to 4 can be
; set (Setup Type0, Setup Type1, Setup Type2, Setup Type3).
[Setup Type0]
;*** LOCALIZE ME BABY ***
Description Short=R&ecommended
;*** LOCALIZE ME BABY ***
Description Long=Installs the most common options. Quickest to download; recommended for most users.

; List of components to install/enable for this Setup Type.
; All other components not listed here will be disabled if
; this Setup Type is selected.

; This download marker file (the first component) needs
; to be listed FIRST!
C0=Component Marker Recommended Start
C1=Component XPCOM
C2=Component GRE
C3=Component Navigator
;C4=Component MailNews
;C5=Component Instant Messenger
C4=Component Spell Checker
C5=Component Flash
C6=Component McAfee Clinic Activator
C7=Component Uninstaller
;C10=Component AOD <-- be sure to renumber!
C8=Component US English Profile Defaults
C9=Component Classic Skin
C10=Component En US lang pack
C11=Component US region pack
;C12=Component Java
;C16=Component DesktopWeather
;C12=Component jsLib Lite
;C18=Component Netscape Search Toolbar
; This download marker file needs to be listed LAST!
C12=Component Marker Recommended End

[/tt]
etc....

; Here we can set the attributes of the component.
; This is really somewhat redundant because we did it above in the setup type, but it never hurts.
[tt]
[Component AOD]

;*** LOCALIZE ME BABY ***

[/tt]
Well I hope this helps. Hey, if you figure out how to disable the sidebar when Netscape starts I would really appreciate it if you could tell me.

Oh, and if you need the CCK I think you can download it from ftp://ftp.netscape.com/pub/cck/english/7.0/ .

How to Disable Sidebar

Postby Roy » Thu 27 Jan, 2005 10:26 am

To disable the sidebar you need to make a change to the localstore.rdf file changing the hidden parameter to "true"
[tt]
<RDF:Description RDF:about="chrome://navigator/content/navigator.xul#sidebar-box"
hidden="false"
width="" />

[/tt]
For an Netscape 7.2 install, this file is found in both the DEFLENUS.xpi and REGUS.xpi files. For other, previous versions of the Netscape install, it was also located in the BROWSER.xpi file.

Other options that could be added in addition or instead are:
[tt]
<RDF:Description RDF:about="chrome://navigator/content/navigator.xul#sidebar-splitter"
hidden="true" />

<RDF:Description RDF:about="chrome://navigator/content/navigator.xul#sidebar-title-box"
hidden="true" />
</RDF:Description>

<RDF:Description RDF:about="chrome://navigator/content/navigator.xul#sidebar-box"
collapsed="true"
width="" />

[/tt]
( Disclaimer: I have used these changes for some of the browser installs I've created, however the results you get may be different based on other install configuration options. )
