Replacing Ns6.1 With Mozilla?

Postby MIKE OF SHEFFIELD » Tue 16 Jul, 2002 6:35 pm

Hi - I am hoping I can get some good advice from here. First time on the new board. The smilies & font codes don't seem to like me.

I am finally intending to download Mozilla as an alternative/replacement for my current NS6.1 suite. Either 1.0 or 1.1a - but there don't seem to be any negative comments or problems with 1.1a that I can find.

The query is this - can I transfer my mailboxes from NS6.1 to Mozilla as I would from (say) NS6.1 to NS7 (and as I did from NS4.7 to NS6.1)? :?

And can I / must I retain my NS profile to do this? Will it bring across my bookmarks etc or will these need re-entering? :?

Unlike Fulvio and others I really don't want to run more than one profile or account if I don't have to - but it would be necessary to retain access to my current mailboxes.

Hope you-all can help!

MIKE OF SHEFFIELD.

Mike,

Well, I would recommend you either get Mozilla 1.0 or wait for Mozilla 1.1 (not alpha nor beta).

Just to keep in your mind, Mozilla is not designed for end-users, (although it runs easily with end-users). If you want better Help files, and better polished interface, wait for Netscape release Netscape 7.0.

BTW, where is "Sheffield"?

Replacing 6.1

Postby Fulvio » Tue 16 Jul, 2002 8:54 pm

Hi Mike,
of Sheffield, which is in Yorkshire, indeed, and almost next door to London, by American and aussie standards or NW.
You should create a new Profile, because regardless of the browser of choice, 6.1 and whatever Moz1.0 or plus-based ,are different enough to create problems. Mail is easily placed in the new Profile, by copying and pasting Inbox or whichever file you wish, and so are Bookmarks.
When you are satisfied that all is well, you can uninstall 6.1, and remove the old profile. You can try to use the same Profile as you did before, but don't complain if something does not work.

Mike,

I know our King of Profile would suggest you to create profile, but I would only suggest you to create one more for testing purpose.

Antony,
did you read my last paragraph? I said to remove the old profile when satisfied.

Mike, I suggest you get a 'stable' 1.0 branch build. The transition from Netscape will be less stressful, and it is good for reliable browsing. This means anything that says 1.0 in it (e.g. 1.01). In fact, the way things are done at Mozilla, 1.02 might come after 1.1...in any case, 1.0 branch builds are more stable and for all intents and purposes, just as advanced as 'bleeding-edge' builds.

Netscape To Mozilla?

Postby MIKE OF SHEFFIELD » Wed 17 Jul, 2002 5:16 pm

Thanks guys! I knew I would get some good pointers here.

Maybe I should curb my youthful impatience (I wish!) yet again, and await Moz 1.1. From the comments the 1.1a alpha version does seem faster and smoother than 1.0 - or am I mis-reading things??

Certainly I have been given the impression from a number of comments on and off this Board (or rather the old one) that the two Mozilla's are smaller, faster, more efficient, etc than NS7PR1 is. Most of the 'extras' that NS want to give me, I don't want anyway.

P.S. : Fulvio - Sheffield is about 260Km from London - a mere fleabite really. Reminds me of when I was working in Sheffield, and our Head Office called up at 16.40 to ask that one of us picked upo a parcel from the Sheffield rail station and delivered it to Harrogate 'on their way home'.
When it was pointed out that Harrogate was actually about 90Km and about 90 mins drive from Sheffield, the answer came "Well it can't be far - it's stilll in Yorkshire isn't it?"

MIke of Sheffield.
