Request-URI Too Large; The requested URL's length exceeds th

Postby chrisdw » Sat 09 Oct, 2010 5:14 pm

Earlier today I was requested to install an update to Firefox, which I did. On quitting the program, another request flicked up saying Firefox wanted me to ‘Run’ something, which I did without paying too close attention. Since then, every attempt to connect to any webpage results in a '414 Request-URI Too Large; The requested URL's length exceeds the capacity limit for this server'. By looking in programs, it says Firefox was last updated at 20:26, the time this problem started. In the browser’s Troubleshooting section it says I have version 3.6.10, but this is a friend’s Sony Viao PC so I’m not sure what it was before or even if this has changed since update. I've tried all basic troubleshooting steps, such as starting in safe mode, deleting cookies and caches and creating a new profile. None work. Please help!
At the end of this post I've put the URL it tries to load each time instead of the homepage; it reverts to this URL no matter what I type in.

Application Basics

Plugins
quite a lot, including adobe 8.1.3.187 (it asked me to allow an installation of adobe earlier today, which I did, though the installation didn't complete for some reason so I cancelled it)

Microsoft Windows Media Player Firefox Plugin 1.0.0.8
Other plug ins too; ActiveTouch General plugin; DivX Player Netscape plugin, ITunes Application detector;Java Deployment Toolkit 6.0.150.3 (not enabled); JavaTM Platform SE6 U15 6.0.150.3 (enabled);Qucktime Plugin; RealJukeBox; RealPlayer; Realplayer G2 LiveConnect; Shockwave Flash; Windows Presentation Foundation

And here's the page it tries to load instead of the homepage; it reverts to this address no matter what I type in:

Have you tried to go to: 1. File|New Tab, and enter your home page, or click Home, to the left of the address space, or just mouseover that icon. In the last case, it should list the URLs in the home page, or group. If you, still, have the home page, as well as that non working address, try to go to Tools|Options|General|Use Current Page, which would be the desired Home page. Close any Tab which you don't want.
You should never have the Firefox setting in Tools|Options|Advanced|Updates checked. Rely on Help|Check for Updates.
I have no idea why you were asked that extra thing, but since it is related to the IP, I would check with their Tech Customer Service, although knowing how clueless most IPs are about non-Microsoft programs, I would not bet on help from them.
