Since Yahoo! mail is web-based, no, you can't. You might be able to look through your browser history (which is much easier if your significant other was using Internet Explorer) and see if you can find something, or you might be able to look in the Trash folder on Yahoo! mail.
If whoever was using Outlook or Netscape Messenger, you could always check message history. Just because they've been deleted from an archive doesn't mean that they're not on your hard drive with such programs.
And since Instant Messenger is completely live with no delay, everything is usually kept server-side.
You might be able to contact Yahoo! and, if you have the username/password to the account you can ask them to retrieve anything they might be able to get, even though the outlook on such an attempt isn't so good.
