Safari 1.2 released . . . BUT . . .

Postby DJGM » Tue 03 Feb, 2004 12:50 pm

Good news:
Apple have released version 1.2 of their Safari web browser . . .

Not good news:
You must have Mac OS X 10.3.x (Panther) to be able to install the new version.
If you still have Mac OS X 10.2.x (Jaguar) you'll have to stick with Safari 1.0 . . .

Now that ain't fair! I'd to update to the latest version of Safari, but I ain't paying
out £99 to upgrade the OS, just to update the browser! Being forced to buy a
full OS upgrade, in order to be able to use the latest version of the browser
is very Microsoftesque. Why is Apple copying Microsoft in this respect?

Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!

I'm not sure why they are doing that, at least they don't say that the browser is an "OS Component", but considering that Jaguar is less than two years old . . . a bit unfair to me.

Imagine if Microsoft released IE 6.0 only for Windows XP users. Well, you'd have to further imagine there were only 1 million XP users, and not 250 million XP users, but... anyway.

MacWorld: "Safari 1.2 'Panther-powered' Apple responds ... Apple says: 'Safari 1.2 has been designed to leverage advances in Panther not present in the Jaguar release of Mac OS X. These Panther technologies are needed to deliver Safari v1.2's most significant improvements. For example, personal certificate support is made possible by Panther-specific security technologies that are simply not available on Jaguar.'" In other words, Apple is integrating their Web browser into the operating system. Fascinating!

As soon as I've finished typing out this message, I'll be going to System Preferences, and Safari will no
longer be the default web browser on my iMac. If Apple don't get off this "Let's copy Microsoft" trip,
anytime soon, I am reluctantly considering the permanent removal of Safari from this computer.

At least Mozilla (and browsers built upon it) don't require you to buy a brand new operating system!

Actually... I didn't think that Safari 1.1 was availible for Mac OS X Jaguar either.

Well... I'm hoping that my iBook G4 will arrive today or tomorrow... I'm really looking forward to having Mac OS X Panther!!!
