Saving address book from Messenger 4.7 that won't open

Postby brucet999 » Fri 23 Dec, 2005 10:51 am

Can anyone who can tell me where Netscape Messenger 4.7 keeps its address book?

My wife uses that e-mail client and it suddenly won't open (opens for 1 second and closes). Re-installing without uninstalling the broken program did not help.

I'm afraid that uninstalling the program before re-loading it would lose the address book. I can find the mail files and save them, but apparently address book info is not in identifiable files that I (or a new e-mail client for that matter) can find and import. As I understand it, you have to export your addresses to a text file and then import that to the new app. Presumably the same would apply when uninstalling and re-installing Netscape 4.7 in order to solve the problem of failure to open.

Thanks,

I have not used NS4.x for over one year, and it is uninstalled, but as it is the case with all programs of the Netscape, and later related ones, removing the program does not affect the profile, which you have already found in the Users folder. I uninstalled the program, but the profile is still there with all its files. The address file is pab.na2, but I don't know if it would help to uninstall and then reinstall the program. But, don't worry, uninstalling will not affect the mail and other files in your Users folder. But, if you do anything go to the add/remove. Ideally, the address book files should be exported in the .ldif format, although the .txt format should do.
If there is nothing wrong with the file, you should be able to use it, and then export it, and save it.
And, consider updrading your Firefox. Your Fiefox is already four updates behind, and there is a Firefox1.5, also.

lost address book second question

Postby brucet999 » Mon 26 Dec, 2005 2:33 pm

Thank you, Fulvio. You gave me the clue I needed.

Knowing that address book was among the "user" files in NS Messenger 4.7, I decided to uninstall Netscape, delete the user files and re-install in order to access the address book data. New install worked until I substituted the old 'User" folder in place of the new one, then it died upon launching just as before. Re-installing and copying old user files one-by-one, it turned out to be "inbox.snm" that was killing the program. By not copying that file (even though it was slightly bigger)I got full function back and all addresses. I also did not copy the old "sent.snm" and "drafts.snm" files which were much larger than the new default ones.

Question: What are ".snm" files and what will we have lost by not substituting the old ones in our re-installed program?

Thanks again, and thanks for the suggestion about updating TB. Is v1.5 stable enough now, or should I wait for v1.5.x?
