07 Jan, 2004 10:17 am 'My Netscape' won't open after running Spy Bot, AdAware [sdp=24372]

After deleting all cookies/history, running Spy Bot and AdAware, I get this (See below) dialog box when I try to open ‘My Netscape.’ The Screen Name and password are correct. I was able to open MY MSN with no problem but cannot figure out why Netscape won’t respond in similar fashion. I would start anew but I don’t want to lose sites I had bookmarked at My Netscape as I have no other record of them.
Is there hope, can anyone help me?

You have entered an invalid Screen Name or password. Please try again.
If you are an AOL member and you also use AOL Instant Messenger with the same screen name, you must use your AOL Password at Screen Name service instead of your AIM password. If you are not an AOL member and you’ve forgotten your password, click ‘OK’, then click ‘I forgot my password’ on the sign-in page.

Are you doing this in Internet Explorer or Netscape? If you are using IE, I have no idea, because I am not using it. If this came from from a Netscape, you should be going to the Pref.|Privacy and Security|Passwords| manage passwords, and delete anything about my netscape, or probably netscape.com.
My Netscape is part of the Netscape the website, and not part of the Netscape the program, so I don't know why you have the problem.
And, why did you use Spybot and Adaware. One of them should be enough. I found out that Spybot has been quite safe, but Adaware 6 is not.
One can retrieve the deleted stuff, but it does not mean that you will be as functional as before. I stopped using Adware 6 after it messed up my Eudora program, even after restoring files which were necessary for the Eudora Sponsored.

Hi Fulvio,
Thanks for the response. I realize that I should have been more specific in my request.
Desiring to distance myself from Microsoft, Windows 98, Internet Explorer, I recently installed Mozilla Firebird 0.7 (but chose not uninstall IE for the time being) and am determined to eventually run a Linux OS, Mandrake perhaps. In my 6th decade, the learning curve is more than a little steep and I have thus far been unable to follow your instructions. As I understand it, clicking on Edit should reveal ‘preferences’ in a dropdown box. I t does not and I am unable to locate it elsewhere.
As for Spy Bot and AdAware? Even though I ran Spy Bot frequently my HP was locking up quite often and running quite slow. Running AdAware revealed spyware that evidently had escaped Spy Bot’s attention. Yours is the first negative report of AdAware that I have run across. If I could just open ‘My Netscape’ I think all would be well. Actually, if I could just locate and retrieve the Bookmarks I placed on ‘My Netscape’ my problem would be solved, ---I think.

Just a quick note here: Both Ad-aware and Spybot should be used to keep a Windows PC free of spyware. There is nothing wrong with using both.

I tried going through http://ncmail.netscape.com and was able to sign in with my screenname and password (using Mozilla) but I couldn't get to My Netscape. I get:

Server Error
This server has encountered an internal error which prevents it from fulfilling your request. The most likely cause is a misconfiguration. Please ask the administrator to look for messages in the server's error log.

I'm already signed in to my.netscape.com in Netscape 4.79 but I was unable to sign out. So, I think the problem is at Netscape's end.

Could be, but, assuming both programs were up-to-date there's always the possiblity of false positives.

Do a groups.google search on Adaware Spybot "false positive" for more information.

I do have both, but after my experience, I am using Adaware more carefully.
I let it do its thing, and, it seems to have done something which is not reversible, when I tried to restore.

I was assuming you were referring to a Netscape, and it was impossible to tell from your original post, but similar settings are in Tools|Options|Privacy for MozFirebird.
Again, I want to make clear to you that "My Netscape" is part of the Netscape website. I was not aware of any bookmarks being there, since the Netscape/Mozilla/Firebird bookmarks are more than enough.
You will be ok in your learning process, if you look around to learn, and not expect that everything in the same place as something else. I can assure you that it works, being in the 7th decade.
As for Linux, it is preferable if you do not do a dual boot . It is great by itself, but you have to be prepared for headaches if you dual boot, and, I expect that everything will fall into place.
