Thanks, Fulvio.
But this raises a question with me and one I've sorted of asked before. What exactly is the purpose of Netscape 8? I simply can't understand why AOL didn't spend a few shekels and "fix" Netscape 7.2 "if" they simply wanted an alternative browsing engine? So...what's the real scoop?

Maybe they find the separate browser and a separate mail client, which is abhorrent to many Mozilla faithfull, to be more attactive since the majority of the AOL users are also IE users. Some people consider the entire idea of Netscape8 a sell out. One could look from another perspective, and consider it a waning away from IE. But, no the way it is.

I sure hope they fix all the issues with the address book. I ended up creating over 20 address books because the mailing list function wasn't stable. And, is it really hard to display them alphabetically?
And, best of all if they would make it more user-friendly to back up your mail, settings and address books.

Thanks for the information, Antony. Do you happen to have a link to the public discussion group?

You still need an AOL/AIM screenname/Netscape webmail account etc to login.

Thanks again, Antony.
I must say... I like the new browser's GUI and I appreciate the potential this browser carries BUT in the short while I've been messing about with it, I've experienced several problems.
- websites failing to load properly (this one included). In Silly Dog, while the website loaded it did not allow me to see all of the graphics nor did it allow me to respond to other posts even though I had logged into the site.
- the forward and backward buttons on my mouse failed to work. Indeed... so did the forward and backward buttons on the toolbar fail to function.
- I had no end of trouble trying to log into my personal webpage at Yahoo. It asked me to include the "code below" after giving my user name and password BUT it failed to display the code.
- I crashed twice... literally froze solid... something I have not done once in Win XP.
So... I'm going to set this beta aside for the time being. I'm not knowledgeable enough to handle all of the inherent bugs but I'm certainly interested when they're ironed out.
Thanks again. I'm returning to Firefox.

It is funny that a friend of mine who missed the testing ( lucky stiff) sent me this link . I uninstalled my previous beta, but kept the profile, and I have been in it for over an hour with no mishap, yet. Those, usually, happen on the second try.
I even got my bookmarks without achrobatics, and the splash screen is Netscape's, and not Cholera, or whatever.

I had been miffed at having to update the passcards every time I used them, but this time, I found, I could select to sign me in immediately. Don't do it.
With another webboard, I was told that I had entered the incorrect username/password. When I click to try to enter it, I was given the same response, except that I had only three more chances, or out. At no time I was given the chance of signing on.
With this web board, I selected to sign with the information saved, and it went bananas. Blibking as if it was attempting to do the job, but could not. I could finally enter the correct information only after, I deleted all passcard info.
The problem may have existed before, but it surfaced only now, for me

Hi everyone,
As you may have read, the general public beta has been pushed back a couple of weeks due to some bugs which we aren't yet comfortable with the general public experiencing. However, we appreciate everyone's help from the prototype to now, so we would like to give you guys a preview of what we will be releasing to the masses soon. Enjoy!
-The Netscape Browser Team |
thanks for sharing the prototypes I learn something new

You should realise this thread is over 4 years old, and refers to now very obsolete (or rather, extinct) Netscape beta software.
Sadly, Netscape is very much dead now, and everyone else has moved on.
