28 Oct, 2005 1:04 pm Netscape Mail - three times smtp server (default)/ identity [sdp=65505]

Hi
I hope that somebody here can help me.
A friend of mine has got Netscape 7.0. He has got an IMAP account. He has got two surnames and would change the name (before the email address) which is shown as sender. But everytime he changes it and closes Netscape it changes back to the old name (he has got 2 surnames but he wants only one shown e.g. "john smith<john.smith@smith.com>"). When I had a look at the settings then he had 3 smtp servers but only one account configured. I could only delete one the other 2 (both exactly the same and on default).

when I had a look at pref.js I found that theres was the following entry:user_pref("mail.smtpservers", "smtp1,smtp1")

so I deleted the second one. After that I found in the smtp settings that there are now 3 smtp servers- all on default and exactly the same.

I also changed the following entries:
user_pref("mail.identity.id1.fullName", "john miller")
user_pref("mail.identity.id2.fullName", "john miller");

I donīt know why here are 2 IDīs..is that standard or does that mean there was set up another account before?
thatīs why I checked the following:
user_pref("mail.accountmanager.accounts", "account2,account1");
user_pref("mail.accountmanager.defaultaccount", "account1");
and thought then its ok?

do you have any idea how I could ensure that the name which is in shown before the email address stays in the settings?

thanks a lot for your help.

ciao goripollo

Is your friend, also, using a Mac? And, where are these changes made?
With an IMAP account, it would be simpler to create a new account, remove the other one. As for the SMTP, it may depend on the ISP. It may need different SMTPs entries, each with its own username and password, even if it looks identical in the list of outgoing mail servers.
The fact that 7.0 and, possibly, Macs are holding me up. I have not had a NS7.0 in ages. But, I remember of a bug in NS7 which created multiple identical SMTPs.

I remember that there was a bug for windows. I have no idea about Macs having it. It would be so much simpler to download a Netscape7.2, if he wants a Netscape suite, uninstall first the older program, and then install 7.2.
7.2 is ok.
The profile would not be removed, and 7.2 could then put its imprint.

It would help if we could get a summary. So far, each post has revealed something new, and it is impossible to even get any idea of what is going on.
I will tell you what I understand. This must a set up at work, not at home. I have no idea if NS7.0 was installed by this guy's company, or it was his idea.
He uses Win2k, which, in many ways is like WinXP. And, he has two IMAP accounts. Each username or surnames, as you call them, is an account.
Also, I think that you said that he wants to use only the newer of the two accounts. And, that there is a SMTP problem.
If I understand this correctly. I would remove the old account. Go to the Outgoing mail, and make sure that the account name is changed, there. The SMTP should be the same for both accounts. The important thing is that you don't have a check mark next to "Use Username and Password", unless it is needed for authentication.
It does not matter at all what he has in the list under advanced, unless I find out something else..

sorry about confusing you. I donīt really know what was new in every post but anyway. yes, heīs got w2k. and yes it was his idea to install it but it was allowed. (even though i donīt know why this should make a difference). no he does not have 2 accounts he has got one. and therefore there is only one account set up in netscape. the surnames he wants to appear in front of the email address: <john smith johnsmith@johnsmith.com> the "john smith" you can enter this in the settings of NS (edit>mail account settings>your name) and it does not remain how i would like to have it.
and i think maybe there lays the problem within the smtp - server settings, because there are 3 identical default servers which I canīt delete)
hope this is better described.

Based on what you say in the last e-mail,
Quote:
only one account set up in netscape. the surnames he wants to appear in front of the email address: <john smith johnsmith@johnsmith.com> the "john smith" you can enter this in the settings of NS (edit>mail account settings>your name) and it does not remain how i would like to have it.
, I read as he is signup up as "johnsmith", but, does he want to replace the johnsmith, with john smith or
john smith johnsmith? In either case these would be two additional usernames. However, if he wants to have his mail received like this:
john smith <johnsmith@johnsmith.com>, which is more reasonable, he should enter :"john smith" in the top line of the identity part of the mail settings, and "johnsmith@johnsmith.com" as the address, in the second line.
The first line identifies the person (although you don't have to enter anything), and the second line, the e-mail address. As for the Outgoing server (SMTP), he should not try to enter his name. There is a server, probably:smtp.johnsmith.com, and the username:johnsmith, which does not have to be entered, unless authentication is required.
Why three smtps? I have no idea, but the account should point to all one of them.

hi
its not about receiving mails.its about sending mails. he does not want to have his second surname sent. something like: john smith <johnsmith@johnsmith.com> instead of john smith miller <johnsmith@johnsmith.com>. as i understood you now is that you mean under the part "mail setting" "your name" is a user account? but how does it happen when i change it in the identity part, it works (mails will be sent as john smith <johnsmith@johnsmith.com) and the settings stay until I close netscape?
