Here's a question that I should have the answer for....

I had NS7 on an old computer, and, I believe, it had an "unsent messages" folder on my main email account.

When I loyally reloaded NS7 on the new computer (running XP, by the way), I see that there is no "unsent messages" folder on my main email account, but one under "Local Folders". When I do a "send message later" thing, they go to the one on the Local Folders.

Now, I realize that this isn't the end of the world, but I'd be curious to know if I should have an "unsent" folder on the main email account also. Do I have reload NS7 to bring it back up?

Any thoughts would be appreciated....

Hi ten13,

There is a workaround for creating an Unsent Messages Folder. Fulvio uses the Drafts folder, but I don't agree that "Drafts" should be used for your "Send Later" messages. The below script should be added to the user.js file, or the prefs.js file:

user_pref("mail.default_sendlater_uri","mailbox://<username>@<servername>/Unsent%20Messages");

<username> and <servername> as they appear on:
Edit | Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings | <account> | Server settings

Credit for this workaround goes to Jeroen Peters who first gave this answer on the Netscape 7 Newsgroup.

I can guarantee the workaround, as I just added the above script to my user.js file. I then composed a message offline, and selected Send Later. When I started Netscape the Unsent Messages folder was in my Main Account, and the unsent msg was there, waiting to be sent. WooHooooooo!

If you haven't created a user.js file and need help with the creation, post back.

Thanks for your imput on this "Unsent" issue I have. But it says to put that line in the "prefs.js" which NS 7 doesn't seem to have. It has A LOT of .js files, but none that are specifically "pref.js"

I tried that line in the "mailnews.js" file---didn't work. I was going to try the "mailnews-ns.js" file, but I figured I would just ask for a clarification here.

Unlike the older versions of NS, the pref.js file is a hidden file, and I had to go looking for it again.

Found it, added the new line, and IT WORKS!

Using NS7.1 and Win2000 SP2. After following the advice of how to get an "Unsent folder" created in my new NS7.1 account. I cannot do a "send later". The message I get is "unable to save your message to send it later. Please verify that your mail & newsgroups account settings are correct and try again". In the lower left hand corner of my screen it says "copy failed". Yes, i did do the "mail.default_sendlater_uri..." thing (using about:config) and set the values as follows "mailbox://<username>@pop-server.midsouth.rr.com/Unsent%20Messages. It still does not work. Needless to say this is quite frustrating. If anyone can help please do. I am serioulsy considering defecting to OUTLOOK
... and I hate outlook.

Go back to about:config and right-click the mail.default_sendlater_uri entry and select "Reset" to get back to the original "default" setting. (You didn't mention it but, IF you also added the preference given above to a user.js file then you'll need to remove the entry from the user.js IN ADDITION TO resetting mail.default_sendlater_uri in about:config)

I use the default Unsent Messages folder under Local Folders, the few times I choose the "Send later" option so I can't speak from experience but.... If you really want the unsent messages folder moved, then reset the preference in about:config, modify it again and then exit and restart Netscape before attempting to use the "send later" option.

The default value of the mail.default_sendlater_uri entry is:
mailbox://nobody@Local%20Folders/Unsent%20Messages
your modified value should look similar to:
mailbox://<username>@<popmailservername>/Unsent%20Messages

Double-check your username and popmailservernames against what is given in Edit>Mail&newsgroup Account Settings> "mailaccount" > server settings.

And you might want to consider uninstalling Netscape 7.1 and upgrading to Netscape 7.2, if only for the bug fixes.

Thaks you Alice for your quick reply. I tried exactly what you mentioned about the resetting the "mail.default_sendlater_uri", then changing it to point to my new server name. I still got the exact same message. I wouldn't mind upgrading to 7.2 if it won't cause further problems. I seem to remember attempting to go to 7.2 months and having horrendous problems with the being able to download email afterwards (might have bene a beta version, though). Do you know of any issues with migrating from 7.1 to 7.2? Also, is there any reason why I shouldn't go to thunderbird?

The only issue that I know of, in "migrating" from 7.1 to 7.2 occurs when both versions are present and the same time, and used with the same profile.
I placed the word migrate in quote because absolutely nothing migrates. Netscape7.1 and 7.2 are made up of three parts. The program, which is removed when you uninstall from the Add/Remove. Only the plugins folder, and one or two other files are preserved. The GRE folder from Program File|Common File|GRE|GRE for each version., which should also be removed. And, the Profile which is left untouched by uninstalling. The Profile sit still, so there is no migration, although changes to the prefs.Js file can and should occur, when a new version is installed.
I have been using Netscape profiles for Mozilla, and viceversa, old and new, with no obvious problem, other than the Themes, as long as the original program is removed. You can have one or more profile per installation, but not the other way around.
And, contrary to the common fear, the profile information is kept intact, when a version is uninstalled.
I have Netscape7.2 with two profiles, which are radically different, as well as Thunderbird, also with two profiles. I am using Firefox1.0, one profile for now, as default browser.

The thread trend seems to have shifted from "unsent"folder to migrating mail.

To return to the original subject:

There can be only one active "unsent" folder per mail profile.
There can be several mail accounts with in the mail profile.

You can change the folder from "Local Folder" to another account as discribed above and it does work.

First you need to understand the difference between "Draft"and "Unsent" .
Consider "Draft" as a work in progress and "Unsent" as a completed work waiting to be sent.

Although it pertains to "return receipt" it clarifies how things work with regards to Draft and Unsent mail.
Logically it is best to leave the "unsent" messages in the Local Folders - But that is just MHO - it does not make sense to have unsent messages from one mail account in another mail account folder.

ok..here is the latest. I have installed NS7.2 It is working (so far). I have my folders intact, mail contacts intact, the whole bit. But of course, the original problem remains. I am not able to switch my "unsent" folder from local to another account. I am still getting the same error message telling me that a copy has failed. This is quite frustrating. These errors give you no usable clues as to what the problem may be or how to resolve them. On a better note, I was having problems "POP"ing my Gmail email. Going to 7.2 seems to have solved that problem. Still, thanks for the help folks and if anyone has any other ideas, I'm waiting in despair

Congratulations on a successful upgrade to Netscape 7.2... Sorry the "send later" function still isn't working when you modify the Unsent Messages folder location.

Can you use "send later" without errors if the mail.default_sendlater_uri preference is reset to the default Local Folders location?

If the problem only occurs when you attempt to switch the active Unsent Messages folder to a specific mail account, I would reset the preference back to the default "Local Folders". Next, I would try removing and then recreating the problem mail account, using the "Remove Account" and "Add Account" buttons in the main "Mail&Newsgroup Account Settings" window.

This will add new entries in the prefs.js file and create a new, empty "pop-server.midsouth.rr.com" folder in your ...\Mozilla\Profiles\"profilename"\xxxxxxxx.SLT\MAIL folder, named something like, pop-server.midsouth.-1.com , in addition to the current "pop-server.midsouth.rr.com" folder that now holds the Inbox, Sent, and other mailbox files... So, if you have current mail, you could EITHER copy the current mailbox contents within Netscape to Local Folders before removing and recreating the mail account ....
OR, after recreating the mail account you can simply use the Mail&Newsgroup Account Settings, Server Settings, "Browse" button to the right of the Local Directory field, to point back to the original MAIL\ pop-server.midsouth.rr.com folder ..... details here:

If you prefer, create a new profile and then migrate your old MAIL and other profile data to the new profile if the "send later" feature works in a new profile, using one of these pages as a guide for migrating specific data like Mail, address book, passwords, bookmarks, etc:

Then modify the mail.default_sendlater_uri preference again, once the new account or new profile is set up.

Hopefully, someone else might come up with an easier fix.... but, If I were you, I would simply use the default "Local Folders" Unsent Messages folder if it's working OK.
