Friend is having issues with his Netscape 7.2 email program and it appears the only solution is to reinstall the program.
Is there a way to save his email and addresses before I uninstall and reinstall it? I am confused on which files I should save a copy of prior to uninstalling.
I also noticed there are no msf files on his machine we looked everywhere, not sure if that is important to know when offering me directions on how to save his current mail and addresses.

it does not mean that because you don't see .msf files, they are not on the hard drive. .msf files are found in the profile, and the profiles are hidden by default.
To see hidden files:
1. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options
2. Click the View tab
3. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders
4. Disable "Hide File Extensions for Known Files."
5. Click OK.
To search for files in the Application Data folder, go to Start | Search.
Under More Advanced Options select Search system folders, Search
Hidden Files and folders, and Search subfolders.
It is always a good idea to backup the profile .slt folder and the Mail folder.
As for the issues with NS7.2, reinstalling is the least likely solution, since all the information is located in the profile. I will tell you what just happened to me. I am using NS7.2, as you can see, and it would not open when I clicked on the shortcut. Cntrl+Alt+Del showed that I was loading about 15 MB of the program, about right for the program, but not for all the data. I checked the profile, and Windows told me that it could not be found. I remember that yesterday when I tried to create a profile for NS9, I placed it in the same folder as for the NS7.2 profile. I did not like what I saw, and I deleted the profile, files and all. I did not pay close attention, and the entire folder, containing both profiles was wiped out.
I was able to start NS7.2 with a profile dedicated, at one time, to Seamonkey, and it started. Thids should demonstrate how important is the profile. I, never, even tried to uninstall/reinstall the program, as it was pointless.
What issues does your friend have?

I double checked and ext are being shown. I tried the search like you suggest and they still couldn't be found.

Wow guess that profile is important for sure. Good to hear you salvaged it.
Original issue was about scanning summary files when he started the email. Couldn't download mail, program it would slow down the program something fierce..
He had hundreds and hundreds! of emails with attachments, some large, in his inbox,trash and other folders he created. I had him delete the trash ones. He created a new folder called Test and I click and dragged his mail from the Inbox to this folder. I have since found out that was not the best way to move them. We then compacted the folders which hasn't been done in over 3 years. When I went to go look at the email in the Test folder all I have is the subject headings but no body in the email.
I installed 7.2 on my machine to learn how to use it and when I click and drag a email to a folder I created this does not happen in my program.
I would like to take his email he has in the program and save it to a cd since there is much important data in them. Then I wanted to save all his email addresses so that if I reinstall the program I can import them. I recall there was a feature to import them I believe. Then he can start with a clean program with no emails in it and I can instruct him on how better to utilize the program and keep it clean compacting etc.

a tip to avoid confusion and long replies. Click on BBCode quick control bar., just above mail box. Then select Quote. Enter the text which you wish to quote, and click Quote again to close quotation. Example: | Quote: | Windows 98SE all patches 333Mhz 128 Ram

. I am not sure why the Search does not show anything, but Win98SE has a different path, and, I don't think that the folders are hidden. The path should be:
C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profile_name\*.slt\Mail\pop.isp_name.net
The important thing, if deleting the .msf file (with program closed) does not help, is to rename the Inbox to anything you want, like Inbox2. I would delete the Inbox.msf file, because it will not represent what we will have. After opening NS, a new Inbox will be recreated, and it should be able to download all messages which are on server.
As for what is in Inbox2, it will depend on the size of the file. If three years of mail represent also a non-compacted folder, there is going to be trouble.
As for the addresses, select the Address Book|Tools|Export| asxxxxx.ldif ,and save file wherever you wish.

I edited your reply to make it easier to read. 
This Screen Shot shows an example of how your Mail Account folder should look. Altho taken using Windows XP, the contents of the Mail Account folder will be identical in Windows 98.
The size of his folders is the problem, and when moving from the Inbox to newly created folders, it's best to right click, and select "Copy", and then move those messages in small increments, rather than all messages at the same time. I think you may have figured this out already. Once copied, and in place, you can then delete the Inbox messages.
If you copy his mail to CD, then rename all the default folders first, i.e., Inbox2, Drafts2, Templates2, Sent2, etc. Then when you copy them from the CD to the Mail Account folder, they won't interfere with the newly created, and pristine default folders.
Remember to check the file attributes of each folder/file you copy from CD to the Mail Account folder. They will have been changed to "Read Only", and you will need to disable that option with a right click on the file, and selecting "Properties".

Thank you I will try to utilize the quote feature from now on.
I am a tad confused. Basically because I don't have the machine in front of me to do things step by step. Unfortunately the owner of the computer also insists that he do all the keystrokes and I prompt him. He is a sweet man but don't ask why he is this way. Grin.
Since I have never done this process it is fruitless for me to do things this way since if something is not correct or I observe that the process didn't work the way it should, (maybe I followed the instructions incorrectly) I can stop and backtrack. I can't really read the monitor from where I sit now explain the next moves if something doesn't go right.
I am so sorry for taking up both of yours time but you both have given me a better understanding of how Netscape 7.2 works. Thank you very much. Looks like I will have to try to test all these procedures out on my xp machine till I get it done correctly then go to his house and try to prompt him through the process.
Romona and Fulvio I will print out all this forum responses and go to his house and see how it goes. Romona I also printed out your image and also your webpage on Preventive Browser Maintenance that I found while searching thru threads. Very well presented. I will review your other pages after I get done here.

I learned many of the tricks from Ramona, who has organized a better Help site than Netscape ever had. Having said that, I want to suggest that you tell this fellow that if he wants current mail, he can rename the Inbox, delete the Inbox.msf file, and allow the program to create a new Inbox file, with a corresponding .msf file. At least, he will have whatever mail is on the server. The rest can come later.
