They also included Flash Player 8 in the package, I just wonder why?

There's nothing wrong with Flash 7.

And it's still for Windows only! Is Netscape ever going to be available for Mac OS X and Linux users again?

19 Oct, 2005 11:42 am disgusted with 8.0.4 [sdp=65102]

I spent a good deal of time fine tuning 8.0.3.3, with the Skypilot Theme, to the point that NS8 was tolerable. Now, I am back to square one. all my settings are changed, and the Tabs which I was using, which, unfortunately, did not save are gone.
I am, pretty much done with 8.0.4. I don't even know where the system mail icon has landed, but, it is gone from the preferences.
I was able to reset it NS8.04. with old reliable Skypilot, and, I noticed that System Mail was out of the picture on the right, but I was able to "catch" it in Skypilot, and drag and drop it where I wanted it.
Still working in getting back the original settings, but I guess I got it back.
Thanks, AOL!

From the way things are going, it's probably obvious that (unfortunately) we won't see a Netscape 8 for a non-Windows operating system. The saddest part of all this is that the NS8 chrome is almost compatible with Firefox, which could have provided at least part of Netscape 8's functionality to other platforms.

Maybe Netscape 8.x.x will only ever be for Windows only. I'm hoping that after SeaMonkey (the internet
application suite formerly known as Mozilla) has gone "gold", that Netscape goes back to being a cross
platform app-suite, built upon SeaMonkey, like Netscape 7.x was built upon the Mozilla App-Suite.

IMHO, while it's built upon a bastardization of Firefox, Netscape 8.x is little more than a very bad joke.

I seriously doubt that, but we must never lose hope...

All I can say is thanks to sillydog.

I only know about the update because I had a couple of minutes to check out what was new in the way of posts.

After I did my work computer, I checked for updates in Netscape on my home computer. Netscape could not find that it had any updates.

So, again, thanks to sillydog, and the folks who keep it going.

Fulvio,

Thanks to your warning about the problems with losing your Preferences after the install of 8.0.4, I was able to install without losing anything, after a copy/paste.

I treated the new install much like the move from one PC to another. Here's what I did:

Removed the salted folder from my C:\Windows|Applications Data\Netscape\NSB folder
(Windows 98SE)
Copied my C:\Program Files\plugins folder
Uninstalled 8.0.3.3
Rebooted

Installed 8.0.4
Let it start once and then closed. Like you said, it was totally messed up.

I then copied the contents of the old salted folder to the new salted folder, started 8.0.4 and everything was there, including extensions and themes. By salted folder I refer to the "randomcharacter.profilename" folder. FWIW...

There's nothing wrong with Flash 7.

I had no end of crashes in NPSWF32, on several different PCs before upgrading to Flash 8 fixed things.

Turns out they occured when NS initialised the IE Flash 7 Control with the Netscape plugin already loaded.

I guess Macromedia never expected a browser to run both their Netscape Plugin & ActiveX Control at the Same Time.

Anyway, not a single crash since the 1st Flash 8 Beta - looks like they've fixed things ...

Version v2.08 of Nullsoft Install System has been used to make Netscape 8.0.4 setup utility.

This is my first post to SD701 with NS8.0.4 installed to test UA string.

Maybe that was why Netscape kept crashing on me. Even the download manager was locking up sometimes. I upgraded to Netscape 8.0.4 with no problems. I have had no crashes or lockup since I upgraded.
