Currently I am running the free version of ZA 5.5.094.000. I understand that there is a security update to version 6.0.667.000. My question is this: is it necessary? I have experienced absolutely no problems this version and hesitate to update it UNLESS it is vital for security. I'd appreciate any feedback. Confused

My first guess... before reading the detail.... No, you don't need it.

If you don't download warez (pirated software), and don't use P2P (file sharing thing), and don't use MSN Messenger, and you surf the net with Firefox/Netscape, your computer should be fine most of the time.

Ah...

Thanks, Antony. That reassures me. I'll just leave well enough alone. Smile

To be honest, and to be safe, all security software should be kept as upto date as possible.
As long as their no major issues with the newest updates in any security app, you should
always apply the updates as soon as you possibly can.

SeaMonkey = Swiss Army Knife: It's versatile, reliable, and contains useful tools.
Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!

In my opinion and in agreement with DJGM, I think you should update it. Look at windows, your computer seems to be working fine with absolutely no problems, but the next day your computer does not boot. Use updates, unless it's itunes.

The reason I raised the issue is the very negative user reports regarding this latest version of ZA. I generally go with updated versions of programs (when they're out of the beta stage) but with ZA the negative reports have caused me to put on the brakes. Until I see some valid reason for updating, I think I'm going to sit tight on version 5. I'm behind a hardware firewall (in my router) so I should be okay. You might want to take a look at the "user reviews" of this version over on downloads.com.

James,

Personally, I tend not to rush into latest version of whatever patches available (except that's from Apple). And I do know there are a huge number of people who can't survive without the latest version of software, but I can.

As for major version jump (e.g. from v. 5.5 to v. 6), it would be wise to wait a bit for the review or feedback from other people, unless you really need to new feature. Each major version jump usually indicates new features available rather than bug fixes.

However, if it's a small update (e.g. from v. 5.5 to v. 5.5.1), then, you should get it installed as quick as possible at your convenience.

My additional 2 cents.

Thanks, Antony. You and I are on the same page, Antony. I'll sit tight and wait for more feedback, particularly of a positive nature.
