Thanks oirzng,

This is now mentioned in MozInfo701

Has anyone noticed the spelling “MAC” on the ordering page aforementioned?

It says “Note: Netscape 8.1 is a Windows only program which doesn't work on a MAC.”

Most skilful network people and programmers in network related sections would know the spelling of MAC usually refers to “MAC address”, where MAC stands for Media Access Control. To refer to Apple Macintosh computers, the spelling is “Mac”. I just feel that page is written by a certain individual we know well.

I didn't expect Netscape 7.2 (although that was a pleasant surprise), I didn't expect Netscape 8.0, and I certainly didn't expect this.

I have to wonder how much longer AOL is going to commission these "Netscape" browsers before finally giving up.

Forgive me yet again for sounding bitter, but as far as I'm concerned the only reason Netscape 8 was commissioned in the first place was as a committee-dictated way for AOL to capitalize on the popularity of Firefox without directly endorsing or (gasp) bundling Firefox itself. Mozilla Firefox has directly taken over Netscape's role as an intuitive Gecko-based browser marketed to end users, and it is Mozilla Firefox that now enjoys one-in-ten to one-in-five user share, not Netscape. Netscape 8 has had no effect in increasing the popularity of Netscape-branded browsers, although it may have had the opposite effect.

Netscape was nothing than a branded form of Mozilla, since AOL took over, until they disbanded the Netscape group, and farmed out the operation.
I was an AOL member for several years, and I was very happy to see their AOL7.0 gecko, and the standalone mail client. AOL7.0 gecko was as good as what it was based on, i.e. up to 6.2.3. Most of the testers were scared stiff of having to put up with a bad programs, and their reactions ranged from threatening to leave AOL, to others who would have accepted a microsoft-based AOL as an option. I think that I was, along with a couple other people the only testers of AOL7.0 gecko. So, you can see that AOL did what any business would have done, and went with what people wanted.
And, I left AOL, but not before suggesting that they come out with a dual capability browser. I am sure that other people had the same idea, but it was logical that AOL would do something like NS8.

I ordered Netscape 7.02 CD and Guidebook in early 2003, and still haven't received them.

Antony,
I was going to comment on your fussiness about MAC, or Mac, but what do you expect? They may not even know if you live in the northern or southers hemisphere.
But, I find something else of interest. The original e-mail shows an User Agent like this, like mine:
UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; but orizg has a double underlined Windows , while I have an underlined Windows NT 5.1, in green letters.
Is this part of advertising, like another newsgroup has?

That's probably the new annoying Intellitxt advertising. I'm still trying to convince Antony to show it to unregistered users only, that thing's really annoying Sad

I had never noticed that before, but it seems like that.
As long as Sillydog gets support, I can handle it. I don't click on those pseudo links.

Ah.... well... I could understand you're ordering the Guidebook since there would probably be tips at configuring that confounded tab option. lol

What I was having a hard time understanding was why anyone would want a cd? They're hopelessly dated by the time you receive them and you can download whatever you need and burn it in minutes.

This is a new advertisement, similar to the one in Windows BBS.

James,
Back then, when Netscape was popular and when people liked Netscape, people bought merchandises for any reasons. Of course, there are always collectors.

I bought a few Netscape CDs from eBay, including Netscape Enterprise Server. I should show you some pictures when I have time to take those.

Hi Antony

Yeah... I'd like to see the things you bought. As for me... I bought Communicator 4.5, Netscape 6, Netscape 7.2 and the accompanying books. And you're right, Antony... I bought them mainly as collector items. I was in love with Netscape! Go figure. Shocked
