I've been having nothing but issues with 8.1 as well. I don't know if it's just me or a serious design flaw in memory management. I downloaded the day it came out. I installed and like DLWilson61, Long load times, crashing, run time errors, thrashing of the HD. I've been a long time user of NS back to 4.x and I've never seen so many issues with a release. Memory management is the biggest issue here.

Check these memory capacity usages out..









The Netscap.exe is just 7.2 installed for comparison. 8.1 is on top of it (netscape.exe).

Now, when browsing with an average of 5 tabs of open, this is the kind of memory problems I'm having. It's slow switching between tabs. It's slow between minimizing and maximizing. Scrolling down an average web page is slow. Logging in to certain website, it completely forgets that you were even a member of it. It's just horrible.

What I've tried to do. Reinstall it, clean install, install on different systems (Celerons, Semprons, Athlons, Pentium-4's wth HT). No resolution.

Is anyone else here having these issues or know of a way to counter it? I'm trying to like it, but the way it's performing is only influencing me get a refund on the disc that I ordered for it.

Yes. That's why I mentioned a few posts back that I essentially consigned it to the backburner because of the frequency of crashes AND the slow responsiveness. Frankly, even IE 7 uses less memory and it is a resource pig if ever there was one. (I also keep IE 7 simply because it has some interesting features)

If I were you, I'd opt for either FF/TB or SeaMonkey. I've had issues with SeaMonkey's newsreader causing me frequent crashes but most have not reported this problem.

NS 8 seems to me to be an answer for a question no one is asking!

And, I thought that I had a problem with 75MB! It took me 23 open tabs to get to 140MB. At that point, I could not post. Yes, it is a resources' hog, and I may have been lucky with mine. But, I rarely use a browser for one straight hour.

Just downloaded 8.1, upgrade from 7 (or 7.something) and I haven't been able to drag icons into my bookmark sidebar. I can open the manager and then drag them down to the main windows toolbar, but that's not too convenient. (I can drag to sidebar in firefox and could in N7). I tried reloading netscape and also importing bookmarks but still can't drag. Actually I can drag it but I can't drop it, I get the little ghostbusters sign.

The design is ok, although if I wanted a firefox browser I'll just use firefox since n8.1 is slower than my firefox browser. Also when I download things I don't see an option for opening the location after it's downloaded. I can open the file from the download manager, but I can't open the file folder from the manager when I save to a location other than the default. I was able to on n7 with 'open file location'.

Was wondering if anyone else was having these issues or if it's something I need to work out on my machine.

When I switch tabs I'm closing the tabs by accident much more often on the new version, which is just a matter of getting use to I guess. I think I'm going to try downloading 7.2 off your archives here.

How to install Netscape 8.1 over Netscape 8.0 without removing 7.2 ?
Message keeps asking to install over 7.2.
Version 8.0 installed without needing to rewrite over earlier version 7.2
I want to keep version 7.2 and just have 8.1 overwrite 8.0 already in system.
Somehow the installation for 8.1 doesn't recognize version 8.0 already in system.

You should not have to install on top of NS7.2, because the folders in which they are installed are completely different. Can you tell the exact words of your message? In my experience I tried to install 8.1 on top of 8.0.4, as they said it should be possible, but it did not work too well. I had to uninstall 8.1, or whatever hybrid I got, and then reinstall 8.1. I had not removed the profile, so there was minimal disturbance.
I just want to make sure that the message you get is when you try to start the installation of 8.1, and not some message from Netscape.
If it is the latter, you should be able to change your settings. Most likely in Tools|Options|advanced|updates.

The netscape 8.1 installer asked if I wanted to install over 7.2.
I figured what the heck! I let the program installer do it's thing.
After a quick install I looked and found that the 7.2 version was still intact.
The 8.0 version had in fact, been sucessfully upgraded.

Now about that message? I still don't understand why 8.1 recognized 7.2 instead of 8.0. The only thing I can come up with is that NS7.2 is still my default browser. I simply like it better. I can't wait until they come up with a Netscape 9.0 fully loaded with it's own new 9.0 composer and essentially an upgrade from 7.2 as it now exists with of course, the extras for added security and such.

I was using Netscape 8.1 on windows XP just fine. I accepted the latest Java update and it started malfunctioning. Ever couple of minutes it would just stop working, and I can do nothing with it. Then a couple of minutes later it would work again for another couple of minutes.

I went out to the Netscape site and got 8.1.2 and installed it ... and had the same results.

I de-installed and re-installed 8.1.2 and I still have the same problem.

The primary reasons I use Netscape are:

1. I don't want my favorites shared with every other application on the machine.
2. When on the road, if I log onto my work network, I have to deal with proxy servers. I let I.E. deal with this. In the hotel room at night, I don't want to have to reconfigue IE.

Has anyone else had this problem with Netscape? Does anyone else have a suggestion for an alternate browser -- I am not "married" to Netscape, it just happens to be (or used to be) a handy way to get around the problems I mentioned above.

If you want a suite, use SeaMonkey (or Opera). My default browser is Firefox and my default e-mail client is Thunderbird. I wouldn't touch Netscape at this point in time. 7.2 is hopelessly outdated and version 8 has been problematic almost from the start.
