Thanks Joji for informing us. I edited your post to make it more suitable for announcement.

It is also interesting to note that the Windows NT 4 is no longer the supported platform.

Can someone tell me which version of Firefox is Netscape 8.1 based on?

Based on Firefox 1.0.x, I guess.

I am guessing it's based on a nightly version of Firefox 1.5, since Gecko/20060111.

My guess is based on rv:1.7.5 (I edited my post above to emphasize) where Firefox 1.5 is rv:1.8.

The Options (under Tools menu) have improved, and I feel it's a bit faster in responding then previous version.

(note: I am running this under Virtual PC for Mac.)

I agree, Antony. It "seems" faster in rendering pages and I love the sleek look and feel of this thing.

I'm curious about the spyware engine. I just ran a full scan (took about ten minutes) and came up clean. Does anyone know which spyware engine they are using or is it their own development (surely not)?

I have no idea, but file size for Netscape 8.1 is 18.3MB, and it was 13.6MB for Netscape 8.0.4, a 3.7MB increase.

This is something new to me:

The ad-blocking blocks Netscape.com's own website. I thought Netscape.com (and AOL) were in the allowed lists back in Netscape 7.x.

I am guessing it's based on a nightly version of Firefox 1.5, since Gecko/20060111.

The Gecko/ string in the UA has nothing to with the Gecko Revision. The "Gecko/2006011" string in Netscape browser 8.1, or any other Gecko-based browser for that matter, is simply the date that version was compiled on. The "rv:1.7.5" part of the UA tells the Gecko revision. But in Netscape 8.x's case, the "rv:" only likely measures page rendering capability, as it's very likely that the group in charge of maintaining Netscape Browser has applied Mozilla security updates up to that of the Mozilla 1.7.12/Firefox 1.0.7 release.

Security Alerts page at

http://browser.netscape.com/ns8/security/alerts.jsp

hasn't been updated yet.

(But we haven't even new MFSAs related to FF1.5 available). For some reasons Mozilla Foundation didn't released them after Firefox 1.5 release.

my observation:
1. its still based on Fx 1.0.x core
2. it can utilize whatever desktop search software u have, (in my case, copernic)
3. passcard button now is not independant anymore, it is part of "security center button group", which means u can not put it on toolbar alone while avoiding the ugly, big, security center button (especially under fusion theme)
4. in fusion theme, the color of tabbar is not compatible with the color of the toolbar and tabs, they changed the color of tabs and toolbar to blue-gray, while tabbar has the same old blue. which makes it extremely weird.

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20060111 Netscape/8.1

Whatever,whatever,have a nice day.

One of the fixed security issue is History.dat issue from December discussed at
http://sillydog.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10371 thread.

I have just confirmed that NS8.1 fixes this issue.

25 Jan, 2006 6:17 pm No more Modern Modoki? [sdp=69406]

I hope that Modern Modoki will become available. It was what I was using, the Win 32 version (1.16?) so that I did not have the "Throbber" in the upper left.

Thanks for explaining the UserAgent bit, Billy.

Juha-Matti,
It is now “download download Netscape 8.1”.
