Site Controls shows greyed-out cookie controls. I can't find any way to turn the cookie controls back on. It seems as if there is a master control someplace that I can't find, and there isn't any explanation in the Help manual. I'm sure that this a simple problem and I just am missing the obvious answer, but would appreciate help!

O.K., here goes.

I am strictly an amateur, but this is what I think:

If you let Netscape 8.x do its own thing, it will install with I.E. as the default engine it will use for all web sites. When Netscape 8.x is using I.E., it is using the I.E. already on your system as part of Windows, and thus is using the cookie configuration you arlreay have in I.E. For example, in I.E., I accept all first party cookies and no third party cookies. So, I think, that is what will happen in Netscape when I select the I.E. engine.

Netscape is not using the Firefox installation on your computer. The reason for this is that, in spite of all of the noise about Firefox, the actual number of installations, on a world scale, is tiny. So, Netscape needs to provide Firefox to those who do not have it. Firefox has its own cookie management, and does not rely on I.E.'s cookies.

So, look at which browser engine you are using., and take it from there.

Thanks for the responses.

I went into IE and changed the global settings to their defaults, and that helped. But, some websites still show the cookies option greyed out, so I still haven't completely resolved the problem. I haven't been consistent in the past in designating the rendering engine, so I'm next going to see if the problem occurs only in websites I initially accessed using FF.

My experience has been pretty good, if I started with the assumption that all sites are ok in the Firefox mode. I use the IE mode only for a few sites. and, then there are those with "sniffers" which look at the fact that a Netscape was used, and, not the view. Those sites, which force me to go to IE are boycotted. I am sure that they are not missing much, but it makes me feel better.

Thanks, macallan1824. To get consistency, I'll return to using NS8, checking each page's browser setting and changing them all to FF and then manually setting what I want re cookies.
