All of a sudden, I am unable to bookmark sites when I am using Firefox. When I click on the "bookmark this page" in Bookmarks, nothing happens. I have to go to Manage Bookmarks and then go through the process of adding a Bookmark from there. Is there a way to make Firefox bookmark a site the way it used to work by simply hitting the "bookmark this page" from within Bookmarks? Or, is there a problem in the program or my profile?

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.0.1) Gecko/20060111 Firefox/1.5.0.1

Windows XP: Sp2, Norton Internet Security, Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware, Spybot Search and Detroy, and AVG 7 for the laptop, user of SeaMonkey and Firefox 3.08. Wife uses latest SeaMonkey on her laptop.

Anything sudden does not look good. I had never tried any way to place a bookmark other than Bookmarks|Bookmarks this page|select folder.
And, I never heard of the problem, so, I would start by cutting the present bookmarks.html file, and pasting it outside the profile folder. Then, copy a backup, which, you, hopefully, have, and paste it in the profile folder.
Even if the file is a bit outdated you could use it, if nothing else the fact that it is either a bad file, or something else. If it does not work, uninstall/reinstall the program. Finally, create a new profile. The question is, could you import the old profile? I would try that.

I have tried using my wife's profile and the bookmark button works as it should. I tried removing quite a few bookmarks from my file to see if that helped but I still cannot use the simple "bookmark this page" to get it to save a site. I am going to try to copy my cut and paste my bookmarks out of the file and then see if an empty folder works. Can I do a cut and paste with just the bookmark files and not take the entire file or must I just copy the file, empty it and see if that works?

From w2hat you tell me, it points to a profile problem.
I would just do what you suggest, or even copy and paste, in a safe place, and then copy another file like that (why not the one from your wife's profile0, and paste in location vacated by your present folder.
Or you may save yourself some trouble by just replacing the present file from one in the bookmarksbackup folder. As many as five days are backed up, so pick a day which it may have been working ok. My oldest is from 3-31. I delete files which are identical, otherwise you get as many as five straight days of backups.
Basically, the backup would tell if if it is the file or not.

Well, I tried to fix this problem but no luck. I removed the bookmarks file from my profile and replaced it with my wife's file. It worked. I then copied my bookmarks into my wife's file and now I am back being unable to bookmark pages without going through the manage bookmarks method. I deleted and then reinstalled Firefox and it still does not work. Clearly, something is wrong with my profile in Firefox. Any suggestions?

Sorry for the double post but I forgot one thing. My ability to bookmark in SeaMonkey is fine -- no problem at all.

If I follow you, it is working fine if you copy your wife's file into the Firefox profile, and replace the existing file. And, that the problem resumes when you copy your own bookmarks into the same file. Do I get it right?
Does the bookmark file in Seamonkey have the same content as that you want to have in Firefox. I would try to copy/paste that file first. A bookmarks.html is always a bookmarks.html file.
Now, if you are still having problems pasting a well working file, without adding anything, then the problem may exist somewhere else.
I would create a new profile. That would mean starting anew with your custom extentions, but you could use a bookmarks.html file which works.
I don't know what in the prefs.js file would carry to cause the problem.

Can I simply delete the Fifefox bookmarks file and replace it with the SeaMonkey file? They are almost identical in terms of what is bookmarked. I assume I can do that.

I am just about out of ideas. I deleted (after making a backup copy) the bookmarks file in my Firefox profile and replaced it with a copy of the bookmarks file from my SeaMonkey profile. Bookmarking a location still will not work in Firefox. I guess my only hope is to create a new profile and copy the bookmarks file to the new one or just use the manage bookmarks option within bookmarks to save a location in Firefox. I hesitate to do that because it is a pain to get all screen names and passwords that I have stored re-entered for each site that needs one.

If you want to make sure that no ill effect from the FF bookmarks file may be carried on (if any are possible), you can rename the FF file, xbookmarks.html
(it can be deleted later), and copy/paste the seamonkey file. All this with FF closed. When you open FF again, you will be using the Seamonkey file.
Don't just replace thr file, but right click|copy from the Seamonkey profile. Now both should have identical files. Now, if the problem persists, It is clear that the problem must be elsewhere.

Fulvio: I tried your suggestion and the problem still remains. Tomorrow I'll create a new profile and see if I can just copy the contents of the file and add them to the bookmarks file in the new profile. If that doesn't work, I'll just live with the problem.

Just to bring this thread to an end, I finally relented and created a new profile and transferred the old bookmarks file into the new profile and all works fine now. I wish I knew what could have caused the problem in the first place but I guess files get corrupted somehow and that is just the way it goes. Anyway, thanks, all, for the suggestions.

The problem may have been in the prefs.js file. I don't know how, but if you replaced completely the bookmarks.html file which was corrupted, the new file should have not been corrupted.
There is some merit about backing up the prefs.js file, in some cases.
