Apple introduced Boot Camp, public beta software that enables Intel-based Macs to run Windows XP. Available as a download beginning today, Boot Camp allows users with a Microsoft Windows XP installation disc to install Windows XP on an Intel-based Mac, and once installation is complete, users can restart their computer to run either Mac OS X or Windows XP. Boot Camp will be a feature in “Leopard,” Apple’s next major release of Mac OS X, that will be previewed at Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference in August.

Boot Camp simplifies Windows installation on an Intel-based Mac by providing a simple graphical step-by-step assistant application to dynamically create a second partition on the hard drive for Windows, to burn a CD with all the necessary Windows drivers, and to install Windows from a Windows XP installation CD. After installation is complete, users can choose to run either Mac OS X or Windows when they restart their computer.

Macs do Windows, too.



“Apple has no desire or plan to sell or support Windows, but many customers have expressed their interest to run Windows on Apple’s superior hardware now that we use Intel processors,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “We think Boot Camp makes the Mac even more appealing to Windows users considering making the switch.”

To note that you need to have a Service Pack 2 CD. If you don't have a Windows XP SP2 CD, you can't boot Windows on your Intel-based Mac. You might have to slipstream Service Pack 2 into your Windows XP CD, or buy Windows XP again.

Also, if you used the "XOM" solution which narf and blanka came up with, you will need to install this to fix your GUID/MBR.

By the way, there was a $1000 prize for getting accelerated ATI drivers to work on Windows XP on Intel Macs... I wonder if Apple's going to get the prize


Also, on the Boot Camp webpage, the link to the MacBook Pro FAQ is incorrect, and points to the Mac Mini FAQ. The correct URL is this (guessed it by subtracting 1 to the artnum of the Mac Mini FAQ).

FWIW ... I've started this thread on another forum I'm a member of, for more additional points of view.

One of the regular members of that forum makes a doom laden prediction that this move would mean
there'll be no more versions of Mac OS within the next five years. I'll only believe that when I see it!

Look at the high-res version of that image. The PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA stop error usually indicates bad memory or bad drivers.

Windows aint at fault, that iMac has bad memory in it - or Apple has supplied buggy drivers!

The Mac Observer reported that Walt Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal said that Apple's Boot Camp runs Windows XP perfectly, even with 15 applications installed.
