According to Yahoo! news, Microsoft is still deciding whether to release next version of Virtual PC or not.

Quote:
“We are continuing to work with Apple on a possible next version of Virtual PC,” said Amanda Lefebvre, marketing manager for Microsoft’s Mac Business Unit. “We still don’t have all the answers, but we are trying to understand what changes need to happen in their operating system and what changes we need to make.”

Virtual PC’s future was thrown into flux by Apple’s move to Intel-built processors. While Microsoft has committed to developing an Intel-native version of its Office suite, Virtual PC was notably absent from a five-year technology agreement between Apple and Microsoft that was unveiled at January’s Macworld Expo.

So, the future is uncertain for VPC on the Mac platform where it all started, but what about VPC for Windows?

I'll bet the Windows version of VPC continues, while the traditional Mac version will eventually be axed

SeaMonkey = Swiss Army Knife: It's versatile, reliable, and contains useful tools.
Windows Internet Explorer = Old Swiss Cheese: Full of holes, and it stinks!

Personally, I doubt that either product will be axed at all. There are advantages to running an OS on top of another: two running at the same time means that you can do work in both. Boot Camp serves its purpose in dual-booting, but consider this: if I dual-boot Windows and Mac, Windows won't be able to read/write an OS X HFS+ partition, and OS X won't be able to write to an NTFS partition (most major OSes have safe NTFS read capability now). That's given that you can see the two volumes from either OS at all, since Windows boots on a Mac using a simulated MBR. With a virtual machine, you can just connect using SMB over a network.

Seeing that OS X is now x86-based, here's to Virtual PC becoming a virtualizer, much like Virtual Server or VMware.

I have a feeling that if VPC for Mac stays as an emulator instead of a virtualizer, they aren't going to get a lot of clients, considering how slower it'll be compared to virtualization solutions... Rolling Eyes

There are still a huge number of users using PowerPC based Macs.

Well, they could always keep shipping VPC7 for PPC Macs, just as they have with other deceased software, say, Windows Media Player for Mac or IE for Mac. I seriously doubt they'd make an emulator for PPC Macs and a virtualizer for x86 Macs, just as well as I doubt that they'd give up the chance to turn Virtual PC into a virtualizer given the opportunity.
