19 Apr, 2006 2:53 pm Mozilla 1.7.13 Released [sdp=72805]

The Mozilla Foundation has released Mozilla 1.7.13 as a stability and security update.

And of major note, this will be the last Mozilla release or the "end-of-life" for the Mozilla Application Suite.
Release Notes wrote:
This release marks the end-of-life of the 1.7.x product line. See the Mozilla Suite 1.7.x Product Sunset Announcement. Mozilla Corporation recommends that all Mozilla Suite users upgrade to Firefox 1.5 and Thunderbird 1.5 available for Windows, Mac, and Linux for free download from www.mozilla.com.

Strangely, the Mozilla Corp. recomends users to "upgrade" to Firefox and Thunderbird, and not SeaMonkey, which is a direct decendant of the Mozilla Suite.

Interesting. It is strange and yet perhaps not so strange. While Seamonkey is the direct descendant of Mozilla, I wonder at the manner in which Seamonkey came about... almost as a protest movement against the abandonning of Mozilla for Firefox. It seems to me (and I've been wrong countless times before) that Seamonkey's days are numbered as are Netscape's. Firefox is the darling with millions of downloads and those advocating it as the alternative to Internet Explorer and as such I cannot really imagine Seamonkey ever commanding anything other than a nominal following. That's not to say that it is not a worthy suite of applications. But like Opera, it seems to be consigned to live in relative obscurity when compared to either Internet Explorer or Firefox (and T-bird). Sad... in a way... but that's life.

UserAgent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.0.2) Gecko/20060308 Firefox/1.5.0.2

Mozilla 1.7.13 is probably analogous to the Mozilla Firefox 1.0.8 release from a few days ago, which occupied a similar function and stipulation (i.e., to bring the superseded Mozilla 1.7/Firefox 1.0 line to a close).

I don't want this to turn into a "to suite or not to suite" rant, but the writing was on the wall three years ago.

Of course! Only Firefox and Thunderbird fall under control of the Mozilla Corporation. SeaMonkey (and the old Mozilla suite for that matter) remain under the umbrella of the Foundation only. [Slight sarcasm is intended.]

Still, it wouldn't hurt for every existing Mozilla 1.x user to try Firefox and Thunderbird out and see if it's suitable for them.

Actually, SeaMonkey isn't under the control of the Mozilla Foundation at all. SeaMonkey is developed by the SeaMonkey Council.

I can't be sure when I'll move on from my comfortable Mozilla 1.7.12, but I will probably move up to Mozilla 1.7.13 as long as my favorite extensions still work.

I have toyed with Firefox 1.0.x and Thunderbird 1.0.x in the past. I found Firefox nice, but did not a good feeling about Thunderbird. Firefox also did not integrate well with the Mozilla Suite Mail that I preferred, so I eventually gave up on the two.

I'll experiment with the latest, greatest Firefox and Thunderbird when I get the chance.

BTW, has anyone announced the availability of the 1.5.0.2 release of Thunderbird? I'm too busy to research this.

I changed this thread so that it is now posted as an Announcement.

It is funny that I am much more confortable with the standalone mail client (TB), than the standalone browser (Firefox). The have not been so many changes in TB, and, very few extentions of interest.
I am not going to get near TB1.5.0.2 until I can find something on the website. But, since it came out today, I don't expect anything. I am in no hurry.
But, it is good to get the story straight about who is driving Seamonkey.
who knows, one day it may become part of the Mozilla Foundation. There are so many people who loathe Netscape8.x, and, of course, are unconfortable with Firefox, but stick with Netscape7.2, because nothing else seems reliable (the poor fellows!).

I don't see the major difference between Mozilla Corporation and Mozilla Foundation. They are not completely independent from each other.
Let's not forget the revenue making business, Mozilla Store, was under the "not-for-profit" section - Mozilla Foundation, rather than the Corporation.

So, Imust have an illness. Everything is going O.K. with Seamonkey 1.0.1. But after my last experience of trying to get it set up, I have re-installed Mozilla 1.7.12, and now updated it to 1.7.13.

I have established a new profile for Mozilla. I imported my bookmarks from Seamonkey.

So, now is it safe for me to run both Seamonkey and Mozilla?

So, I got my own answer:

I laiunched Mozilla 1.7.13 and started a new profile. So, now I had two profiles, one that should stick only to Seamonkey, and one that should stick to Mozilla.

Well, that is in fact not what happened. After diddling with Mozilla and its profile, I closed it.

I launched Seamonkey and guess what? It was using the new profile that I had started with Mozilla. So, the best one can expect is if one launches one of these browsers is to select the profile on start-up. That pretty much sucks.

After all of the advice that one needs to have a separate profile, it tun\rns out that this just does not work.

Any thoughts???

I like Sea Monkey , it certainly at least on my machine renders pages faster than Firefox . I'm not really to sure what the diference is between SM and Mozilla 1.7.12 , to me they look the same . Have had no problems running SM though.

vipergg,

You are not going to find any great deal of difference. Differences will be "at the edges".

When MozillaCorp decided to end development of the MozillaSuite and concentrate on the stand-alone Firefox and Thunderbird, a group who wanted to see the continuation of an integrated suite adopted the project, whihc, after long thought, was named Seamonkey, after one of the original "project"
names.
